Getting There and Ferries in Taitung and Green Island
Part of the Taitung and Green Island travel guide — see every topic in All Taitung and Green Island Guides.
Taitung is on the far side of the mountains from Taiwan's big western cities, but it is easy to reach. Trains run from Taipei along the east coast and from Kaohsiung across the south. Taitung airport has domestic flights. From Fugang harbour, just north of the city, ferries sail to Green Island and Orchid Island. The weather controls everything here, so always leave extra time in your plans.
By train
Taitung station is on the main railway around the island. From Taipei, fast express trains along the east coast through Hualien take about 3.5 to 4.5 hours, and slower trains take longer. From Kaohsiung, trains cross the south of Taiwan on the South-Link line and take about 2 to 3 hours. Tickets for fast trains sell out on weekends and holidays, so book early on the Taiwan Railway website or app. The ride from Hualien to Taitung follows the East Rift Valley and is very scenic. Taitung station is a few kilometres from the city centre, so take a bus or taxi.
By plane
Taitung airport is a small domestic airport just outside the city. Flights go to Taipei Songshan airport and take about one hour. There are also small planes from Taitung to Green Island and Orchid Island. These island planes carry only a few passengers, so seats sell out fast, especially in summer. Flights to the islands are often cancelled in strong wind or low cloud. Book early, and have a backup plan, such as the ferry. Buses and taxis connect the airport with the city and the train station.
Ferries from Fugang
Fugang fishery harbour is a short drive north of central Taitung. Ferries to Green Island take about 50 to 60 minutes, with several sailings a day in the busy season. Ferries to Orchid Island take about two to three hours. In summer, there are also boats to Orchid Island from Houbihu in Kenting. Buy tickets at the harbour or online, and bring your passport. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Many guesthouses on Green Island sell packages that include the ferry, a room and a scooter.
Sea conditions and cancellations
The sea between Taitung and the islands can be rough, and ferries are often cancelled when the wind or waves are too strong. This happens most from about November to March, when the northeast wind blows, and during typhoons in summer and autumn. Cancellations can be announced on the same day. Always check the weather and the ferry company before you go to the harbour. Plan at least one spare day before any flight home. If you get seasick, take medicine before boarding, sit near the back and look at the horizon.
Getting around Taitung
Taitung city is small and easy to walk. A long bike path loops along the coast and through parks, and bikes are easy to rent. For trips into the East Rift Valley or along the coast, the train, local buses or a rental car work well. Some tourist bus lines link the city with Zhiben, Luye and the coast. Scooters are common, but you need a motorcycle licence and an international driving permit. Many visitors spend two nights in Taitung, two nights on Green Island, and add Chishang or Orchid Island if they have time.
