Sunrise and Morning Mist in Sun Moon Lake

Part of the Sun Moon Lake travel guide — see every topic in All Sun Moon Lake Guides.

Sun Moon Lake is at its most beautiful in the first hour of the day. The water is often perfectly still, the hills around it are dark, and on cool mornings a layer of mist sits on the surface. By mid-morning the tour buses arrive and the light turns flat. If you stay overnight, set an alarm. Sunrise here needs no long drive or early train — most good viewpoints are a short walk or ride from the lakeside hotels.

Shuishe pier and boardwalk

The easiest spot is the lakeside boardwalk at Shuishe, next to the main village. You look east and south across the water as the sky changes colour over the hills. It is a short walk from most hotels, so you can step out just before sunrise and be back in time for breakfast. Photographers often set up on the piers and the shoreline paths nearby. Even when the sun is hidden by cloud, the soft light on the water makes the walk worthwhile. Fishermen and local walkers are often out at this hour too.

Xiangshan and the bike path

The Xiangshan Visitor Center, east of Shuishe along the bike path, is another fine place at dawn. Its curved concrete roof is a well-known piece of modern architecture, and the open terraces face the lake. From here you can walk or ride the flat boardwalk sections of the bike path, which sit right over the water. In the early morning the path is almost empty, and you can see the light move across the lake. Combine sunrise here with an early bike ride back to Shuishe before the day gets hot.

Maolan Mountain at dawn

For a higher view, walk up the Maolan Mountain trail in the hills north of the lake. The route climbs through tea fields, and on cool, clear mornings you may see a sea of cloud filling the valleys below. This needs a very early start and a torch for the first part, or a taxi to the trailhead. The view depends on the weather, so check the forecast the night before. A clear sky after a cool night gives the best chance of low mist. Bring a warm layer, as it is colder on the hill than by the water.

Ita Thao and the south shore

If you stay on the south side, the shore around Ita Thao gives a different angle. You look north across the lake, with Lalu Island in the middle distance. The village is quiet before the shops open, and it is a calm time to walk along the water. Remember that Lalu Island is a sacred place for the Thao people. Visitors are not allowed to land on it, and it is best seen from the shore or from a boat. Early morning is also a good time to see birds feeding along the edges of the lake.

When to go

Mist on the water and seas of cloud are most common in the cooler months, roughly from autumn to spring, after a clear and calm night. Summer mornings can be hazy, and typhoon season brings unsettled weather. Sunrise time changes through the year, from before half past five in early summer to around half past six in mid-winter, so check the exact time the evening before. Arrive about thirty minutes early, because the best colour often comes before the sun appears. A small torch and a jacket are useful in every season.
