Sky Mirror in Kuala Selangor
Part of the Kuala Selangor travel guide — see every topic in All Kuala Selangor Guides.
The Sky Mirror is a sandbar in the sea off Kuala Selangor that appears only at very low tide. When the water drops, a thin layer of seawater stays on the flat sand. On a calm, bright day it reflects the sky and clouds like a giant mirror, and photos of people standing on it look like they are floating in the sky.
How the Sky Mirror works
The sandbar is covered by the sea most of the time. It comes up only during the lowest tides of the month, which happen a few days around the full moon and the new moon. Even then it is above water for just a few hours. So trips run only on certain days and at certain times. The mirror effect is best when there is little wind and the water on the sand is still and very shallow. Clouds and blue sky make the best reflections.
Booking a trip
You cannot go on your own. Trips are run by local tour operators, who sell places for each tide day. Boats usually leave from a jetty in the Kuala Selangor area, near the river mouth. The boat ride out to the sandbar takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Most trips include time on the sand and help with photos, often with props and photo poses. Places can sell out on weekends and holidays, so book early. Check the trip date and meeting time carefully, because they follow the tide.
On the sandbar
On the sand, you walk barefoot in shallow water. Small crabs, shells and other sea life live in the sand, so walk gently. There is no shade, and the sun is strong, even in the morning. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and clothes that can get wet. A waterproof bag for your phone is useful. Wear clothes in bright colours, because they look good in the reflection. Staff will tell you when it is time to go back before the tide comes in.
Weather and safety
Trips can be cancelled or cut short in rain, strong wind or rough sea. Afternoon storms are common in this part of Malaysia, so morning trips are often calmer. Listen to the boat crew and wear a life jacket on the boat. Never stay on the sandbar after the crew calls you back, because the tide rises fast. If you get seasick, take medicine before the boat ride. Check the forecast the day before, and ask the operator about their policy if the weather is bad.
