Fireflies at Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor
Part of the Kuala Selangor travel guide — see every topic in All Kuala Selangor Guides.
The firefly boat ride at Kampung Kuantan is the best-known night trip near Kuala Lumpur. After dark, small boats move slowly along the Selangor River. Thousands of tiny fireflies sit in the mangrove trees on the banks and flash their lights, often at the same time, so the trees look like they are covered in blinking lights. Firefly tourism here started in the early 1970s.
What you will see
The fireflies live in the berembang trees, a kind of mangrove that grows along the river banks. The males gather in the trees at night and flash to attract females. Large groups can flash together in rhythm, which is rare in the world and very beautiful to watch. From the boat you see whole trees glowing and blinking in the dark. The boat moves slowly and quietly close to the trees. A ride lasts a short time, often around 20 to 30 minutes.
How the boat ride works
The firefly park at Kampung Kuantan is run by the local council and uses small boats. You buy a ticket at the jetty, wait for your turn, put on a life jacket and sit in the boat with a few other people. A boatman steers along the river while you watch the banks. Boats usually start soon after dark, around 8 pm, and run until late evening. Times can change, so check locally. On weekends and holidays, the queue can be long, so go early.
Rules to protect the fireflies
Fireflies are very sensitive to light and noise. Do not use flash, torches or phone screens on the boat, and keep your voice low. Photos rarely work in the dark, so it is better to just watch. Do not touch the trees or try to catch the fireflies. The insects depend on healthy mangroves and clean water, and their numbers can drop when the river banks are damaged. By following the rules, you help keep the fireflies here for future visitors.
Best conditions
Choose a dark night. When the moon is full and bright, the fireflies are harder to see, so nights near the new moon are best. Heavy rain can stop the boats or reduce the number of fireflies. A dry, calm, moonless night gives the best show. Bring insect repellent, because mosquitoes are common by the river. There is also a second firefly area nearby at Kampung Bukit Belimbing, run by private operators, if the main jetty is busy. Plan for the visit to take about one hour.
Day trip from Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Selangor is about 55 kilometres northwest of Kuala Lumpur, and the drive usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, longer in rush hour. A car or a booked driver is the easiest way, because the firefly jetty is outside town and late at night there is little transport back. Selangor buses run from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Selangor town, but they are slow and stop running in the evening. A good plan is to leave Kuala Lumpur after lunch, see Bukit Melawati and the Nature Park, eat seafood at sunset and take a firefly boat after 8 pm. You get back to the city around midnight. If you want the Sky Mirror too, stay one night and take a morning tide trip.
