Pasir Penambang Seafood in Kuala Selangor

Part of the Kuala Selangor travel guide — see every topic in All Kuala Selangor Guides.

Pasir Penambang is a fishing village on the north bank of the Selangor River, just across the bridge from Kuala Selangor town. It is famous for its seafood restaurants, many on wooden decks by the water. Fishing boats tie up nearby, so the seafood is fresh. An early dinner here fits well before a night firefly boat.

The seafood restaurants

Many restaurants line the river bank, from big halls on stilts to small family places. Most are open-air, with fans and views of the river and fishing boats. Some restaurants have fresh seafood on display, and you choose your fish, prawns or crab and how to cook it. Menus usually have pictures, which helps if you do not read Malay. Weekends and holidays are busy, especially at sunset, so go a little early to get a table by the water.

What to order

Popular dishes include chilli crab, butter prawns, steamed fish with lime and chilli, and squid fried with salt and egg yolk. Clams cooked with ginger or chilli are also common. Order a vegetable dish, such as stir-fried kangkung, and rice for the table. Many dishes are spicy, so ask for less chilli if you prefer mild food. Prices depend on the weight of the seafood and the season, so ask the price before you order. Many restaurants are halal. Pay at the counter when you finish.

The fishing village

Before dinner, walk around the village and the jetty area. You can see colourful fishing boats, nets drying in the sun and shops selling dried fish, salted fish and crackers. Some stalls sell snacks made from local seafood, which are good to take home. The area is busy in the late afternoon when boats come in. Be careful near the jetty edges, which can be wet and slippery, and give fishermen space to work. The view of the river at sunset is lovely.

Timing your meal

Most visitors come for a late lunch or an early dinner. A good plan is to visit Bukit Melawati and the Nature Park in the afternoon, eat at Pasir Penambang around sunset, then drive to the firefly jetty at Kampung Kuantan after dark. The drive between them is short. If you are on a Sky Mirror trip, many operators meet near this area, so lunch here fits well after a morning on the sandbar. Check opening hours, as some restaurants close on certain weekdays.
