Manta Rays in Raja Ampat

Part of the Raja Ampat travel guide — see every topic in All Raja Ampat Guides.

Raja Ampat holds one of the best-studied manta populations in the world, and both species occur: the resident reef manta, Mobula alfredi, and the larger oceanic manta, Mobula birostris, which reaches seven metres across. Research here identified individuals by their unique belly spot patterns and produced some of the evidence behind Indonesia's 2014 decision to protect mantas across its entire exclusive economic zone — at the time the largest manta sanctuary on earth.

Manta Sandy

The best-known site, in the Dampier Strait between Mansuar and Arborek. It is a cleaning station on a sandy bottom at around fifteen metres where wrasse and butterflyfish service the mantas' skin and gills. The protocol is strict and unusual: divers kneel in the sand behind a line of stones marking the boundary, in a single row, and wait. Numbers are limited to a set group at a time, and boats queue. Doing it any other way — approaching, swimming out to them, hovering above — drives the animals off and is what the stone line exists to prevent.

The other sites

Blue Magic, a seamount in the same strait, gets mantas alongside sharks and big schooling fish and is a more dynamic dive. Arborek jetty and the shallow water around Arborek village produce surface feeding, sometimes visible to snorkellers. In the south, Misool's Magic Mountain is one of the few places where oceanic and reef mantas are both seen at the same cleaning station, and is regarded by many operators as the single best manta site in Indonesia. Eagle Rock and Karang Bayangan complete the southern circuit.

Season and behaviour

Mantas are present year-round. Numbers rise with plankton, and the peak in the Dampier Strait is broadly the wetter months from about November through March, when the strait is also choppier. In Misool the pattern is similar. Feeding behaviour — barrel-rolling through a plankton patch, sometimes in a chain of several animals — is more common in the peak, while cleaning-station visits happen throughout. Water is warm, twenty-seven to thirty degrees, and the sites are shallow enough for long bottom times.

Etiquette that actually matters

Never touch, never chase, never swim over the top of a manta, and never enter the cleaning station itself. Approach from the side and stay low. Keep bubbles away from directly underneath. Do not use strobes at close range. If the mantas leave, the answer is to stay still and wait rather than follow. Photograph the belly rather than the silhouette if you can: several research projects maintain identification databases from visitor photographs, and the spot patterns are as individual as fingerprints.
