Sorong and Waisai Decoded in Raja Ampat

Nobody comes to Raja Ampat for Sorong or Waisai, and almost everybody spends at least one night in one of them. Sorong is a working port city of a few hundred thousand on the western tip of the Papuan mainland, the transport hub for the whole region, with an airport, a harbour and a genuinely good night market. Waisai is the small capital of the Raja Ampat regency on Waigeo, where the ferry arrives and where you buy the marine park permit. Understanding both saves a wasted day.
Sorong
Sorong is not attractive but it is functional and it is the last place with proper shops, ATMs, a pharmacy and a hospital. Hotels run 300,000–900,000 rupiah and cluster near the airport and the harbour; staying near the harbour makes the morning ferry easier. The Tembok Berlin waterfront strip has a good evening food scene, and the fish market and night market are worth an hour — grilled fish, sago, and Papuan produce you will not see elsewhere. Stock up here: batteries, sunscreen, snacks, medication and cash.
The Sorong to Waisai connection
Ferries leave from Usaha Mina harbour, typically twice a day and not on Sundays, taking around two hours. The schedule changes and a late flight arrival usually means an overnight in Sorong. Buy the ticket at the harbour on the day; there is an economy and a business class and the difference is air conditioning and a seat rather than a bench. Get there an hour early in peak season. If you are heading to Misool rather than Waigeo, your resort transfer or liveaboard leaves directly from Sorong and you do not go to Waisai at all.
Waisai
Waisai is small — a harbour, a main street, a market, a few hotels and government buildings. The essential business here is the marine park office, where the entry permit is issued, and this is the last ATM you will see. There are a handful of hotels at 300,000–800,000 rupiah if your onward boat is the next morning. WWF and the tourism office can help with homestay contacts. Beyond that there is little reason to linger, and most people are met at the jetty and taken straight to their island.
Practical advice
Plan a night in Sorong on the way in and, if you have an international connection, on the way out too — the ferry and the flight schedule do not reliably connect and a missed link is expensive. Withdraw all the cash you will need in Sorong; Waisai's ATMs exist but run out. Buy anything you might want in Sorong, because Waisai's shops are limited and the islands have none. And confirm your homestay pickup at Waisai jetty in advance, because arriving with no boat and no signal is a genuinely awkward position.
