Best Time to Visit in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat's seasons run counter to most of Indonesia, which catches people out. The archipelago sits just below the equator in Papua, and its weather is driven by monsoon winds rather than a simple wet-dry split. The main visiting season is broadly October to April, when the sea is calm and liveaboards run. From June to September the south-easterly trade winds bring wind, swell and choppy crossings, and a number of operators relocate. Rain falls year-round; there is no genuinely dry month.

The main season, October to April

Calm water, comfortable crossings and the fullest liveaboard schedule. Visibility is generally good, plankton rises through the wetter months which brings mantas in numbers, and this is when the northern sites in the Dampier Strait are at their best. It is also the busiest and most expensive window, with homestays and resorts booking out months ahead over Christmas, New Year and Easter. December to February can bring heavy rain, but it typically falls as squalls rather than all-day weather and rarely stops a dive.

The windy months, June to September

South-easterly winds build swell, particularly in the south around Misool and on exposed crossings. Some liveaboards leave for other parts of Indonesia and some homestays reduce boat trips. It is not a closed season — the Dampier Strait is relatively sheltered and diving continues — but travel between islands becomes less reliable and long charters to Wayag or Piaynemo can be cancelled. Prices are lower and the archipelago is quiet. July and August are also good months for bird-of-paradise displays.

What changes underwater

Water temperature is stable at twenty-seven to thirty degrees all year and a three-millimetre suit is plenty. Visibility ranges fifteen to thirty metres and is generally best in the calmer months. Manta numbers track plankton, which broadly peaks from November through March in the Dampier Strait. Current is a constant rather than a seasonal factor and is driven by the tide, so the moon matters more than the month — spring tides around the full and new moon give the strongest flow and the biggest schooling action, and the most demanding diving.

Choosing your window

For the best all-round conditions and the fullest range of trips: October, November, March and April, which sit either side of the peak and avoid the highest prices. For mantas: December to March. For the calmest seas and the most reliable long charters to Wayag: October to April. For quiet and low prices, accepting some weather disruption: June to September. Avoid the fortnight around Christmas and New Year unless you have booked far ahead, because everything from the flight to the homestay will be full.
