Raja Ampat's cost structure is unusual. Accommodation at the homestay end is genuinely inexpensive at 350,000–600,000 rupiah a night including all meals. What costs money is movement: flights to Sorong, the marine park permit, the homestay pickup, and every boat trip thereafter, priced largely by fuel that has been shipped a very long way. A budget week here is entirely achievable; it just requires understanding that the boat, not the bed, is the line item that decides the total.

Getting there

Flights from Jakarta or Bali to Sorong run 1.5–4 million rupiah each way, and rise steeply in the December–January peak. The ferry from Sorong to Waisai is 130,000–250,000. The homestay pickup from Waisai jetty is 500,000–1,500,000 depending on distance, and is the most commonly overlooked cost in the whole trip. The marine park permit is a further significant one-off, at a higher rate for foreign visitors. Together, getting yourself onto a beach in Raja Ampat costs several million rupiah before you have done anything.

Staying and eating

A homestay is 350,000–600,000 rupiah per person per night, full board — three meals, a bungalow, a mosquito net. That is the entire cost of being there, and there is nothing to spend money on beyond it. Mid-range eco-resorts run 2–5 million per person per night, and the high-end resorts in Misool and the Dampier Strait are 8–20 million. Liveaboards sit at 4–12 million per person per night. There are no restaurants, no bars and no shops on the islands, so the accommodation rate really is the food budget too.

Boats and diving

This is where the money goes. A day boat from a homestay is 800,000–2,500,000 rupiah depending on distance; a charter to Piaynemo is 3–6 million; Wayag is 8–15 million. Two-tank dives are 1.5–2.5 million per person including gear. Village site fees add 50,000–500,000 each at Piaynemo, Arborek, Sawandarek and the bird sites. Because the boat price is per boat rather than per person, filling it is the single biggest saving available — ask your homestay to combine you with other guests, and be flexible about which day.

Realistic totals

A frugal week staying in homestays, snorkelling the house reef most days, and joining two shared boat trips: roughly 12–18 million rupiah all in from Jakarta, excluding international flights. A diving week with daily two-tank trips: 25–40 million. A liveaboard week: 40–90 million. Cash is essential — there are ATMs only in Sorong and Waisai and nothing is cashless in the islands. Draw more than you plan to spend, in small notes, because change for a 100,000 note is genuinely scarce in a village.
