Islands and Beaches in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat means "Four Kings", after the four largest islands — Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool — around which are scattered more than fifteen hundred smaller ones across roughly 40,000 square kilometres. Almost none are connected by road; the archipelago runs on boats. The beaches are white coral sand backed by limestone and forest, most of them empty, and many of the best are simply the strip in front of a homestay that six people are using.

The main islands

Waigeo is the largest and holds Waisai, the regency capital and the ferry port. Its southern coast and the adjacent island of Gam are where most homestays cluster, along the Dampier Strait. Batanta is forested, mountainous and has waterfalls running to the sea; it is where several birding trips go. Salawati is the least visited of the four. Misool, in the far south, is four to five hours by fast boat from Sorong and holds the archipelago's best soft coral, its densest karst and a small number of high-end resorts.

The small islands worth reaching

Kri and Mansuar sit in the Dampier Strait and are the classic homestay bases, both with excellent house reefs. Arborek is a small village island with a jetty that has become one of the most photographed spots in Papua — coral and fish directly under the pilings, and a village that has organised itself around visitors thoughtfully. Friwen has a vertical soft-coral wall a metre from the beach. Sawandarek has a village, a jetty and turtles. Wayag and the Fam group in the north-west are landscape rather than beach destinations.

Beaches and swimming

Most beaches here are coral sand fronting a reef flat, which means the swimming is shallow at low tide and the entry can be sharp — reef shoes are genuinely useful. The best sand is on the small uninhabited islands and on the northern coasts of Kri and Mansuar. Currents in the straits are strong and unforgiving; stay inside the reef flat unless you are with a boat. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows at several beaches, notably at Wayag, and are harmless. Saltwater crocodiles are present in some mangrove areas and are not.

Getting between them

There is no scheduled transport between islands beyond the Sorong–Waisai ferry. Everything else is a charter, either through your homestay or a resort. Small boat hire from a homestay is 800,000–2,500,000 rupiah a day depending on distance and fuel, and fuel is the dominant cost — it is shipped in and expensive. This is why grouping up matters: a boat to Piaynemo costs the same whether two people or eight are in it. Homestays coordinate shared trips, and asking around the night before is the normal method.
