Perfect 7 Day Itinerary in Raja Ampat

Part of the Raja Ampat travel guide — see every topic in All Raja Ampat Guides.

Seven days in Raja Ampat is really five, because the journey from Bali or Jakarta consumes a day in each direction. That is enough for a proper stay in the Dampier Strait, one long charter to the Fam group for Piaynemo, and a pre-dawn bird walk, with time to snorkel a house reef every day. It is not enough to add Misool, which needs its own trip. This itinerary assumes homestays on Kri or Mansuar and boat trips shared with other guests.

Days 1–2: getting in

Fly to Sorong, usually arriving early morning after an overnight routing via Jakarta or Makassar. Buy the marine park permit through your agent or in Waisai, draw cash, and take the late-morning ferry to Waisai, two hours. Your homestay's boat meets you at the jetty and runs you out to Kri, Mansuar or Gam, another one to two hours. That is the whole day. Spend the last of the afternoon in the water on the house reef, which in this archipelago is frequently better than the paid dive sites elsewhere.

Days 3–4: the Dampier Strait

Two days of diving or snorkelling in the strait. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, Blue Magic and Chicken Reef for the schooling action and the current; Manta Sandy for the cleaning station, where you kneel behind the stone line and wait. For snorkellers, Arborek jetty, Sawandarek, Friwen Wall and Yenbuba jetty are all shallow and exceptional. Break the days with a village visit — Arborek has organised itself well for visitors — and be back on the beach for sunset, which in the strait is consistently good.

Day 5: Piaynemo and the Fam group

A long day and the one that needs a shared boat: two to three hours north-west to the Fam islands. Piaynemo's boardwalk and staircase to the karst viewpoint first, before the light goes hard, then the Star Lagoon scramble next door, then a snorkel stop at Melissa's Garden, which is one of the most beautiful shallow coral gardens in Indonesia. Back by late afternoon. Expect 3–6 million rupiah for the boat, split between however many people your homestay can gather.

Days 6–7: birds and out

A four a.m. start for the red bird of paradise at Sawinggrai or a Wilson's site, back by nine, then a last morning on the reef and a paddle through the Kabui passage if you can get a kayak. Travel out the following morning: boat to Waisai, ferry to Sorong, and a night there before the flight home — do not try to make a same-day international connection. If you have an extra two days, add a night on Gam for a second bird site and a slower pace.
