Marine Life and Biodiversity in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat's biodiversity is not a marketing claim; it is a measured result. Surveys led by Conservation International and the ichthyologist Gerald Allen recorded over 1,500 species of reef fish and around 600 species of hard coral here — roughly seventy-five per cent of all coral species known to science, in an area that is a tiny fraction of a per cent of the world's oceans. The reason is position: Raja Ampat sits at the confluence of the Pacific and Indian oceans at the heart of the Coral Triangle, and has acted as a species reservoir through past climate shifts.

The signature species

The tasselled wobbegong is a flat, fringed carpet shark that lies on coral looking like a rug and is genuinely startling when it moves. The Raja Ampat walking shark, Hemiscyllium freycineti, uses its fins to walk across the reef at night in shallow water and is found nowhere else. Four species of pygmy seahorse occur here, each smaller than a fingernail and each living on a specific gorgonian species. Add manta rays, blacktip and grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish, and the enormous schools of jack, barracuda and fusilier that stack up on the current-swept seamounts.

Coral and habitats

The reefs range from shallow gardens of staghorn and table coral to vertical soft-coral walls in the strait currents. Misool has the densest soft coral in the archipelago. Mangrove fringes many bays and, unusually, coral grows directly among the mangrove roots in Kabui Bay and around Gam — a habitat combination that barely exists elsewhere and is worth a snorkel on its own. Seagrass beds support dugongs, which are present though rarely seen. The karst islands themselves are limestone, undercut at the waterline by the tide into their characteristic mushroom shape.

Above the water

The land holds its own endemics. Waigeo and Batanta are the only places where the red bird of paradise and Wilson's bird of paradise occur, both requiring a pre-dawn walk to a display tree. Northern cassowaries live on Waigeo. The islands are also on migratory routes, and the mangrove and forest edges hold hornbills, kingfishers, cockatoos and eclectus parrots. Several homestays around Gam arrange bird walks with local guides, and the whole thing is genuinely accessible in a way birdwatching in New Guinea usually is not.

Why it survives

Raja Ampat's condition owes a great deal to a network of marine protected areas established from 2007 onwards, run in partnership between the regional government, local communities and conservation organisations, and to sasi — a traditional Papuan system of periodic harvesting bans on specific reefs, enforced by village authority. Shark and manta fishing were banned across the regency in 2010, ahead of the national sanctuary. Homestay tourism was deliberately structured so that revenue reaches the villages that own the reefs, which is the mechanism that makes protection hold.
