Getting There and Around in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat is remote and the journey is part of the cost. From Bali or Jakarta you fly to Sorong on the western tip of the Papuan mainland, usually overnight or with a connection, then take a ferry two hours across to Waisai on Waigeo, then arrange a boat to wherever you are staying. Nothing about it is difficult, but it takes the best part of two days each way and the connections do not forgive a tight schedule. Build in a night in Sorong at each end.
Flights to Sorong
Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong is served from Jakarta, Makassar, Manado and Ambon, most commonly via an overnight routing or a connection through Makassar. From Bali the practical options involve a connection and often an early-morning arrival, which pairs well with the ferry. Fares are 1.5–4 million rupiah each way. Baggage allowances on domestic carriers are strictly enforced and dive gear pushes most people into excess — check the allowance and buy extra in advance, which is far cheaper than at the desk.
The ferry to Waisai
Fast ferries run from Sorong's Usaha Mina harbour to Waisai on Waigeo, taking around two hours, with typically two departures a day — commonly late morning and early afternoon, though the schedule changes and does not run on Sundays. Fares are roughly 130,000–250,000 rupiah depending on class. Buy the ticket at the harbour on the day. Miss the last boat and you are in Sorong overnight, which is why an evening flight arrival means an extra night. Charter speedboats exist and are expensive.
From Waisai onwards
Waisai is the regency capital and the point where you pay the marine park permit. From there, your homestay or resort arranges a boat pickup, typically 500,000–1,500,000 rupiah depending on distance — agree this when booking, because it is a significant and frequently unexpected cost. There is no public transport between islands. Day trips to dive sites, Piaynemo or the bird sites are all chartered, and grouping with other guests is how you make them affordable. Misool in the south is reached directly from Sorong by resort transfer or liveaboard, not via Waisai.
Practical planning
Take cash from Sorong: there are ATMs in Sorong and Waisai and effectively none beyond. Fuel is the dominant cost of every boat trip and it is shipped in, so distances translate directly into money. Phone signal exists around Waisai and patchily elsewhere; assume none. Nothing runs on Sunday in most villages, including boats. Allow a buffer day before any international flight home. And do not plan to arrive and leave on the same ferry day as your homestay booking — the connections are too tight to absorb a delay.
