Getting There and Around in Komodo Island

Komodo has become substantially easier to reach in the last decade. Labuan Bajo's Komodo Airport was upgraded to take jets and now handles direct flights from Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, which turned a two-day overland-and-ferry journey into a ninety-minute hop. Once you are there, the park itself is reachable only by boat — there are no roads, no scheduled ferries to the islands and no way to visit independently without chartering something.
Flights
Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is about ninety minutes and is the main route, with several flights a day on Indonesian carriers. There are also direct services from Jakarta and Surabaya. Fares run 700,000–2,000,000 rupiah depending on how far ahead you book and rise sharply in July, August and around New Year. The airport is ten minutes from town. Baggage allowances on domestic carriers are lower than international ones and are enforced, which matters if you are carrying dive gear. Afternoon flights are more prone to weather delays than morning ones.
Overland and ferry
The slow way in is worth knowing about because it is a genuinely good trip. Ferries run from Bali via Lombok and Sumbawa to Labuan Bajo, and there are also multi-day boat trips from Lombok that stop at islands along the way — four days and three nights, sleeping on deck, which is a well-established backpacker route. From the Flores side, the Trans-Flores highway runs east through Ruteng, Bajawa and Ende to Maumere, past Wae Rebo and the Kelimutu crater lakes, and is one of the best road journeys in Indonesia.
Getting around the park
Everything is by boat from Labuan Bajo harbour, and there is no independent alternative — no scheduled service, no way to hop between islands on your own. The options are a shared day trip, a shared overnight, a dive boat, or a private charter. Crossing times: Kelor twenty minutes, Rinca one to two hours, Manta Point around two, Padar three to four, and the northern sites longer. Speedboats cut that substantially and cost more; wooden boats are slower, cheaper and much more pleasant to be on.
Around Labuan Bajo
The town itself is walkable end to end in twenty minutes. Scooters rent for 80,000–120,000 rupiah a day and are useful for the viewpoints above town, Batu Cermin cave and the beaches south along the coast. Ojek motorbike taxis work on negotiation rather than an app, since ride-hailing coverage here is thin. For inland Flores — Cunca Wulang, the Spider Web rice fields, Wae Rebo — a car with driver is 700,000–1,000,000 rupiah a day, and the roads are winding, slow and spectacular.
