Labuan Bajo Decoded in Komodo Island

Labuan Bajo sits on the western tip of Flores and is the only realistic base for Komodo National Park. Fifteen years ago it was a fishing harbour with a handful of guesthouses; the Indonesian government then designated it one of five priority tourism destinations, the airport was upgraded to handle jets, and the town has been under construction ever since. It is now a strip of hotels, dive shops, boat agents and restaurants along a spectacular harbour, with real growing pains — water shortages, waste management and prices that have risen faster than the service.
The layout
One main road, Jalan Soekarno Hatta, runs along the waterfront from the harbour south past the dive shops and restaurants and up the hill towards the airport. The harbour at the north end is where every boat leaves from. The hillside above the strip holds most of the mid-range and upper hotels, which is where the views are. Everything in town is within a twenty-minute walk or a five-minute ride. The airport is ten minutes inland, which makes Labuan Bajo one of the easiest arrivals in Indonesia.
Eating and drinking
The seafood is the point: the night market on the waterfront sells fish, squid and prawns grilled to order, chosen from ice by weight, at a fraction of restaurant prices. Above that there is a surprisingly good spread of restaurants for a town this size — Italian, Spanish, modern Indonesian — driven by the dive and yacht crowd, with several rooftop bars that look west over the islands and catch a genuinely excellent sunset. Prices are noticeably higher than Flores generally: a main is 80,000–200,000 rupiah.
Booking boats and dives
Almost everyone books here rather than in advance, and the agents line the main street. That gives you room to negotiate and to look at the boat before committing, which is worth doing. Compare at least three quotes and establish exactly what is included — park fees, ranger fees, equipment, drinking water. For diving, the established operators with their own boats and compressors are a different proposition from an agent reselling a seat. Book a day or two ahead in peak season, and note that many agents take cash only or add a card surcharge.
Beyond the boats
Most people treat Labuan Bajo as a transit point, which undersells western Flores. Cunca Wulang is a canyon and waterfall about an hour inland where you swim between rock walls. Batu Cermin is a limestone cave complex on the edge of town. The Mbeliling forest has birdwatching for Flores endemics. Further east, the road to Ruteng passes through the Spider Web rice fields at Cancar and the traditional village of Wae Rebo, a five-hour drive and a three-hour uphill walk away and one of the most remarkable places in Indonesia.
