Perfect 3 Day Itinerary in Komodo Island

Part of the Komodo Island travel guide — see every topic in All Komodo Island Guides.

Three days is the right length for Komodo and the structure almost picks itself: one night on land at either end and two on a boat in the middle, or one on the boat and two in town if you would rather sleep still. The single decision that most improves the trip is being inside the park overnight, because it puts you on Padar's ridge at sunrise instead of at nine with three hundred other people. Everything below assumes flights into and out of Labuan Bajo.

Day 1: arrive and get organised

Fly into Labuan Bajo in the morning — connections come through Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya and the flight from Denpasar is about ninety minutes. Spend the afternoon walking the main street and comparing at least three boat agents, looking at the actual vessel where you can, and confirming in writing what park fees are included. If you would rather not spend the afternoon on logistics, book ahead with an established dive operator instead. Sunset from a rooftop bar over the harbour, then the waterfront night market for grilled fish.

Day 2: into the park

Boats leave in the early afternoon on a two-night trip, or at six in the morning on a one-night. Afternoon stops at Kelor or Kanawa for a swim and a short climb, then anchor for the night in a sheltered bay near Padar. If you are diving instead, a three-dive day takes in Batu Bolong, Manta Point and Siaba Besar or Tatawa. Either way the evening on deck — no phone signal, no light pollution, the Milky Way over a dry ridgeline — is one of the better parts of the trip.

Day 3: Padar, dragons, mantas

Up at four-thirty for the climb to Padar's ridge before sunrise. Back on board for breakfast, then Pink Beach for an hour of snorkelling while the light is still low enough for the sand to read pink. Late morning at Loh Buaya on Rinca for the dragon walk on the elevated boardwalk. Early afternoon at Karang Makassar for the mantas, then Taka Makassar's sandbar beside it, and Siaba Besar for turtles on the way back. Into Labuan Bajo by late afternoon.

With more or less time

With four or five days, add a second night in the park to reach Gili Lawa in the north and to dive Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, or take a day on Flores for the Cunca Wulang canyon. With a week, the drive east through Ruteng to Wae Rebo village and on to the coloured crater lakes at Kelimutu is one of the best road trips in Indonesia. With only two days, do a single long day trip covering Padar, Pink Beach, Rinca and Manta Point, and accept that you will see Padar at nine in the morning.
