Best Time to Visit in Komodo Island

Komodo sits in the driest part of Indonesia. The islands get a fraction of Bali's rainfall, which is why they look like African savanna rather than jungle, and the year splits sharply between a long dry season and a short, intense wet one. Unlike much of Indonesia, the wet season here materially affects whether you can go: the strait gets rough, some boats stop running, and diving visibility drops. The practical window is April to November, with the shoulders offering the best combination of conditions and price.

The dry season, April to November

Hot, dry, and calm. Daytime highs of thirty to thirty-three degrees, very little rain, and a sea that is generally flat enough for the crossing to be comfortable. Diving visibility is at its best, the ridge walks on Padar and Gili Lawa are clear, and the islands are brown and stark, which photographs better than it sounds. July and August are the busiest and, at the southern dive sites, the coldest, with upwelling dropping water temperatures to around twenty degrees. April, May, October and November are the sweet spot.

The wet season, December to March

Rain, wind and swell. January and February are the worst: the crossing from Labuan Bajo becomes genuinely rough, day trips get cancelled, and a number of liveaboards move to other parts of Indonesia entirely. Visibility drops, though plankton rises, which is good for mantas and bad for photography. Prices fall substantially and the park is empty. If you are set on going in these months, choose an operator with a larger, heavier boat and build slack into your itinerary for weather days.

Wildlife timing

Dragons are visible year-round and are most active in the morning and late afternoon. Mating season is around July and August, when males are more mobile and more aggressive. Females guard nesting mounds from roughly September to January. Mantas are present all year, with numbers rising during plankton blooms, broadly December to March and again in the July–August upwelling. Whale sharks appear occasionally in the northern park. Turtles at Siaba Besar are a constant.

Crowds and cost

July and August bring European summer holidays and Indonesian school holidays together; Padar's ridge can hold several hundred people at nine in the morning and boats queue at Manta Point. Christmas and New Year is a second peak despite the weather. The quietest good months are late April, May, October and early November, when conditions are still fine, prices are twenty to thirty per cent lower, and Padar at sunrise can be nearly empty. Whatever the month, going at dawn beats any seasonal calculation.
