Perfect 7 Day Itinerary in Bali

Part of the Bali travel guide — see every topic in All Bali Guides.

The single biggest mistake on a first Bali trip is booking seven nights in one place and day-tripping everywhere. Bali's roads make that expensive in time: Seminyak to Ubud is ninety minutes, Ubud to Uluwatu is two hours, and you can lose four hours of a day to a car. The fix is two or three bases, moving once or twice. This itinerary uses Ubud for the interior and the Bukit or Canggu for the coast, with a night on Nusa Lembongan or Penida in the middle, and it assumes a car with driver on the moving days.

Days 1–3: Ubud and the interior

Land, transfer straight to Ubud (ninety minutes) and give the first afternoon to the Campuhan Ridge walk and an early dinner — jet lag makes an early night sensible. Day two: sunrise at Tegallalang before the crowds, then a cooking class or the Ubud market, the Monkey Forest, and a kecak or legong performance in the evening. Day three: a full day north — the Batur caldera rim for coffee and the volcano view, Lake Bratan, and the Munduk waterfalls — leaving by seven. If you would rather climb than drive, swap in the Mount Batur sunrise hike and take the afternoon off.

Days 4–5: the Nusa islands

Drive to Sanur (an hour) and take a mid-morning fast boat to Nusa Penida or Lembongan. If you want the dramatic coastline, choose Penida, hire a car and driver, and do the west circuit — Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong — in the late afternoon when the day boats have gone, then the east circuit the next morning before they arrive. If you would rather swim and snorkel than drive, choose Lembongan: Devil's Tear at sunset, the mangroves and the Yellow Bridge to Ceningan, and a manta snorkel trip in the morning.

Days 6–7: the coast

Boat back to Sanur and drive to the Bukit or Canggu. On the Bukit: an afternoon at Bingin or Balangan, sunset at Single Fin, and a seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran. In Canggu: a surf lesson at Batu Bolong in the morning, a long lunch, and a beach club for the sunset. Keep the last morning free and near the airport — Jimbaran or Seminyak both work — because Ngurah Rai's departure hall is slow and the road to it is worse in the afternoon.

Variations

With ten days, add two nights in Amed or Sidemen on the east coast between Ubud and the islands — snorkelling straight off the beach, the Liberty wreck, and terraces with nobody on them. If you are travelling with children, swap the Bukit for Sanur: reef-protected swimming, a flat cycling path and shorter drives. If you are here to surf, base yourself in Canggu for four nights and the Bukit for three, and skip Ubud entirely. And if you have only four days, do Ubud and one coast, and leave the islands for next time.
