Romantic Things to Do in Bali

Bali receives an enormous number of honeymooners and weddings, and the industry that has grown up around that produces a very specific set of images: the floating breakfast, the flower bath, the swing over the valley. Those things are pleasant and heavily photographed. The more memorable version of a romantic Bali trip is generally quieter and involves getting away from the resort strip — a river-gorge villa in Sayan, a black-sand bay in Amed at sunset, or a night on Nusa Lembongan when the day boats have gone.
Where to stay for it
The Ayung river gorge above Ubud — Sayan and Payangan — holds the island's most dramatic hotels, built into a jungle valley with infinity pools that appear to fall into it. The Uluwatu cliffs are the coastal equivalent, seventy metres above the Indian Ocean. Both are genuinely spectacular and priced accordingly. The underrated alternative is Sidemen: a valley of rice terraces under Mount Agung with small, beautiful properties, no crowds, and rates a fraction of the headline resorts. Amed and Munduk offer the same trade.
Dinners worth planning
Jimbaran's beach grills put a table on the sand with a candle and a whole fish priced by weight, with planes landing across the bay — unpretentious and hard to beat. The cliff restaurants above Uluwatu do the dramatic version at sunset. In Ubud, Bridges and the Four Seasons' Ayung Terrace look down into the gorge. Locavore and Room4Dessert are the destination tasting menus. Book anything with a view at least a few days ahead, and ask specifically for a table on the edge — most places have two tiers and only one of them has the view.
The good set-pieces
A sunrise at the Batur caldera rim from a Pinggan viewpoint, with coffee, and no hiking required. A private boat from Amed at dawn. The kecak fire dance on the Uluwatu clifftop as the sun goes down — a chanting circle of sixty men, no instruments, and a genuinely hypnotic hour. A day on a chartered boat to Nusa Lembongan. A traditional Balinese couples massage at a spa in the Ubud lanes for 400,000 rupiah rather than four million at a hotel. And the Campuhan Ridge before seven, when there is mist in both valleys and nobody else on the path.
Weddings and vow renewals
Bali is one of the world's biggest destination-wedding markets and the infrastructure is excellent — cliff chapels, beach set-ups, planners who handle everything. The legal position is the thing to understand: a legally binding marriage in Indonesia requires a religious ceremony and both parties to declare a recognised religion, plus paperwork through your embassy and the civil registry. Most foreign couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on Bali. Any reputable planner will explain this clearly; one that glosses over it is a warning sign.
