The big public hospital in Udon Thani and the largest for a long way around: roughly 1,150 beds, every major department, and a teaching role for the medical faculty of Khon Kaen University. It costs a fraction of any private hospital in town. The trade-off is queues, crowded wards and paperwork mostly in Thai.
What it is known for
Size and reach. With about 1,150 beds this is the largest hospital in the upper north-east and the Ministry of Public Health’s regional referral hospital for Udon Thani: the one that takes the serious road-accident cases, the complicated births, the long admissions and the work the smaller provincial hospitals around it cannot do. It is also a clinical teaching centre for the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University, which is part of why the specialist cover here is deeper than the province’s size alone would explain. The hospital was founded in 1951 and has grown on the same central site ever since.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at a price they can pay, long-stay residents who hold Thai social security, and anyone in an emergency for whom it is simply the nearest big hospital. It is not the place for a quick consultation in English: the queues are long, the wards are busy, forms are in Thai and English is limited to a few doctors and the emergency department. Bring a Thai-speaking friend if you can, and expect to wait.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners are charged more than Thai citizens but still a fraction of what any private hospital in Udon Thani bills for the same treatment, and even an admission is affordable without insurance. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card; insurers almost never direct-bill a public hospital, so expect to pay and claim. Bring your passport, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you go — both are routine requests, but you have to make them.
Getting there
On Pho Niyom Road in the middle of Udon Thani, a few minutes from Nong Prajak Park and walkable from many city-centre hotels. Songthaews running through the centre pass close by, and Grab and Bolt both work in the city; a tuk-tuk is fine for a short hop but no place for an injury.
