Wattana is Udon Thani’s other private hospital: about 100 beds on Suppakijjanya Road, open since 1985, with the clinics a general hospital carries and a long cross-border history. The group also runs Wattana Hospital in Nong Khai by the Mekong and the Alliance International Medical Center in Vientiane, so it is used to patients arriving from the Lao side.
What it is known for
Forty years in the city, and the border practice around it. North Eastern Wattana opened on 8 June 1985 with 25 beds, reached about 100 by 1989, was certified to ISO 9001 in 2001 and entered Thailand’s Hospital Accreditation scheme in 2007. Its clinics cover internal medicine and cardiology, general, orthopaedic and vascular surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, urology, kidney medicine, infectious disease, eyes, ear-nose-and-throat, dermatology, dentistry and rehabilitation. What sets it apart is the group around it: a sister hospital in Nong Khai on the Mekong and a medical centre in Vientiane, which makes it a familiar name to patients crossing the bridge.
Who it suits
Anyone in central Udon Thani who wants a private hospital without the flagship’s bill, residents who would rather have a regular doctor than a production, and patients from the Lao side already in the group’s care. It is a general hospital rather than a specialist centre: serious trauma and complex surgery are better taken straight to Bangkok Hospital Udon or to the regional public hospital, both only a few minutes away in the same part of town.
Cost and insurance
Private, but at the practical end of the market. The hospital publishes the insurers it accepts and runs a medical coordination office for insurance paperwork, which is worth using before treatment rather than after; for everyone else it is pay-and-claim, settled at the cashier. A deposit is normal on admission. Ask for the estimate first, and take away an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate, because a claim filed later without them is a great deal harder.

On Suppakijjanya Road in Mak Khaeng, in the middle of Udon Thani and a few minutes from the railway station and most city-centre hotels.
