Aek Udon has been the city’s international private hospital since 1997: a general hospital on Posri Road with a 24-hour emergency department, its own ambulances and a helipad on the roof, and an international patient department that arranges interpreting, insurance billing and airport transfers. It describes itself as a 350-bed hospital accredited to the American AACI standard.

What it is known for

Being the city’s international private hospital before it had competition. Aek Udon opened in 1997, describes itself as a 350-bed private hospital, and covers the usual general-hospital ground: internal medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, kidney and infectious disease, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, general and orthopaedic surgery, eyes, ear-nose-and-throat and dentistry. Its emergency department is open around the clock with fifteen observation beds, two ambulances and a rooftop helipad for transfers, and its imaging department runs a spiral CT scanner, ultrasound and mammography. The hospital states that it is accredited to the American AACI standard and certified to ISO 9001:2015.

Who it suits

Visitors who want private care and English at the desk without the flagship’s prices, and anyone travelling specifically for treatment. The hospital runs an international patient department that offers free interpreting, coordinates direct billing with international insurers, helps with medical-visa paperwork and will send an ambulance or a van to meet you at Udon Thani airport. It also publishes a medical-travel guide for foreign patients, last updated in July 2026, which is a fair measure of how much of its work is international.

Cost and insurance

Mid-range private prices — above the public hospitals, below Bangkok Hospital Udon. The hospital says it bills major international insurers directly and keeps a claims desk to help with policies of any kind, but treat direct billing as something to confirm before treatment rather than assume. A deposit is normal on admission. Outpatient visits are usually settled at the cashier on the day, so carry a card that works abroad, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave.

Getting there

On Posri Road in the centre of Udon Thani, one of the main roads running east to west through the city, a few minutes by car from Central Udon and the night market. The hospital has its own forecourt on the main road, so any taxi, Grab or songthaew running along Posri can drop you at the door. The switchboard is +66 42 342 555 and the emergency department does not close. Airport pickups can be arranged if treatment is booked in advance.

Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
