The big public hospital for the whole of Rayong province. Around 555 beds, every major department and a clinical medical education centre, at Thai public-hospital prices — which for a foreigner paying cash are a fraction of a private bill. It opened in 1951 and was raised to regional status in 1997. The trade-offs are queues, crowded wards and paperwork in Thai.
What it is known for
Size and reach. With around 555 beds this is far and away the largest hospital in the province and the Ministry of Public Health’s referral hospital for it, classed as a regional hospital since 1997 and part of Health Region 6. It is the one that takes the serious road-accident cases from Sukhumvit Road and the coast, the complicated births and the long admissions, and it trains doctors through a clinical medical education centre run with Thammasat University. It has stood on Sukhumvit Road in Tha Pradu, in the middle of the city, since 1951.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at a price they can pay, long-stay residents who hold Thai social security, and anyone in a serious emergency for whom it is simply the nearest hospital with the beds and the specialists. It is not the place for a quick English-language consultation about something minor: queues in the outpatient clinics are long, wards are crowded and forms come in Thai. Bring a Thai-speaking friend if you can, and expect to wait.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners are charged more than Thai citizens but still a fraction of what either private hospital in Rayong bills for the same treatment, and an admission that would be ruinous elsewhere is affordable here. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card; insurers almost never direct-bill a Thai public hospital, so expect to pay and claim. Bring your passport, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate — both are routine requests.
Getting there
On Sukhumvit Road in Tha Pradu, in the middle of Rayong city, so almost any songthaew or taxi passes it and ride-hailing cars find it without trouble. It is about half an hour by road from the Ban Phe ferry piers and around fifteen minutes from Bangkok Hospital Rayong on the other side of town. The switchboard is +66 38 611 104.
