For anyone staying on the Ao Nang side, or reaching it by boat from Railay, it is the nearest hospital of any kind.
What it is known for
Being where the visitors are. Until it opened, Ao Nang — where most of Krabi’s tourists sleep — had clinics but no hospital, and every real emergency meant half an hour on the road to town. Wattanapat Hospital Ao Nang is a branch of the Wattanapat group, a Trang private hospital company that has been running hospitals for more than fifty years, and it is built as a small full-service hospital rather than a large clinic: 56 inpatient beds with an intensive-care unit, a 24-hour emergency and trauma centre with its own ambulance team, and clinics that include cardiology, neurology, surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ear-nose-and-throat, eyes, physiotherapy, haemodialysis and an MRI and X-ray department.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara or Klong Muang, and anyone on Railay, which has no road and sends its casualties across by longtail to Ao Nang in about fifteen minutes. That covers most of the province’s visitors and most of its injuries: scooter slides on the Khlong Haeng road, falls from the climbing routes on Railay and Tonsai, coral cuts that have gone bad, and the fevers and stomach upsets of any beach town. It is a small hospital, so a complex case may still be transferred to Krabi Town or Phuket, but it is the right first stop on this side of the province, and English is spoken.
Cost and insurance
Private prices. The hospital publishes a list of the insurers it works with and will arrange a guarantee of payment for an admission with those; for anyone else, and for outpatient visits, it is pay-and-claim, with a deposit if you are admitted. Ask for the estimate before treatment starts, keep the itemised receipt and the discharge summary, and ask for an English-language medical certificate before you leave — climbers and divers in particular should make sure the paperwork names the activity, because that is the first thing the insurer will ask about.
Getting there
On the Ao Nang–Khlong Haeng road (Route 4203), a few minutes by car inland from Ao Nang beach; any tuk-tuk or Grab from the beachfront will take you, and a taxi from Krabi Town takes about half an hour. From Railay take a longtail to Ao Nang West, then five minutes by road.
