The island’s only hospital: a 30-bed Ministry of Public Health community hospital on the east coast of Lanta Yai by Lanta Old Town, with an emergency room, daytime outpatient clinics and a dental unit. It stabilises and refers: anything serious goes across the ferry to Krabi Town or Trang.
What it is known for
Being the only hospital on Koh Lanta. It is a 30-bed community hospital of the kind the Ministry of Public Health runs in every district, sitting on the quiet east coast of Lanta Yai by the Old Town rather than among the west-coast resorts, and its own statement of purpose is a community hospital up to standard for a tourist island. It runs an emergency room, outpatient clinics on office hours, dental and health-check services and the district ambulance under the 1669 system. What it cannot do is complex surgery, intensive care or anything needing a specialist: those patients are stabilised and sent to Krabi Hospital, or to Trang, by road and ferry.
Who it suits
Anyone on the island who is hurt or ill beyond what a clinic can manage: motorbike injuries on the hilly southern roads, deep coral cuts, dehydration, a child with a high fever at night. For minor complaints in daytime the clinics on the west coast — in Saladan, along the Long Beach road and at the Klong Nin junction — are closer and open into the evening, and the pharmacies handle the rest. It is a Thai public hospital, so expect Thai-first service and some English, and bring your passport. If you are insured and the problem is serious, the hospital can arrange the transfer to a private hospital on the mainland.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, the cheapest care on the island by a wide margin. Foreigners pay a higher tariff than Thais but a visit with medicine still costs little; pay at the cashier in cash or by card. Insurance is pay-and-claim — no insurer direct-bills a community hospital — so ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave, and if you are being transferred to a private hospital in Krabi or Trang, phone your insurer’s assistance line before the ambulance goes so that the receiving hospital has a guarantee of payment waiting for you.
Getting there
On the east-coast road of Lanta Yai by Lanta Old Town, about half an hour by road from Saladan pier and twenty to thirty minutes from the west-coast beaches. A taxi, tuk-tuk or hotel car is the sensible way; do not ride a scooter with an injury. In an emergency call 1669 — the hospital runs the island’s ambulance. For a mainland transfer, the vehicle ferry from Lanta Noi to Hua Hin pier runs from early morning until about ten at night, and Krabi Town is roughly an hour and a half beyond it; outside ferry hours a transfer is slower, and the hospital arranges it.
