The public hospital for Koh Chang district: a community hospital of around 24 beds in Dan Mai, the administrative village on the east coast, fifteen minutes south of the ferry piers and on the opposite side of the island from the beaches. It handles the everyday medicine of the island and the first hour of its emergencies at Thai public prices; anything serious is stabilised and sent to Trat.
What it is known for
Being the island’s own hospital, and being cheap. Koh Chang Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s community hospital for the district, a first-level secondary hospital of around 24 beds in Dan Mai, the government village on the east coast where the district office, police station and fire service also sit. It runs outpatient clinics, an emergency room and an ambulance, and works with the village health stations at Klong Son, Klong Prao, Bang Bao and Salak Phet that deal with cuts, exhaust burns and fevers. It is not built for major trauma or surgery: those cases are stabilised here and referred to Trat Hospital on the mainland, by ambulance on the car ferry.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance, long-stay residents, and anyone on the east coast or near the piers who needs the nearest emergency room. A consultation with tests and medicine costs a fraction of the private hospital across the island, and the doctors see the same scooter injuries and stomach bugs every week. The trade-offs are those of every Thai community hospital: queues in the outpatient clinics, forms in Thai, English limited to the emergency room and a few doctors, and a long drive from the west-coast beaches. Bring a Thai-speaking friend if you can, and your passport in any case.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, which for a foreigner paying cash are still very low: a visit is typically a few hundred baht, and even an overnight admission is affordable. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card before you leave. Insurers do not direct-bill a community hospital, so it is pay-and-claim: ask for an itemised receipt and, if you need one, a medical certificate in English — both are routine requests, but you have to make them. If you are transferred to the mainland, the ambulance and the ferry are charged too, at public rates.
Getting there
In Dan Mai on the east-coast road, about fifteen minutes south of the Ao Sapparot ferry pier and twenty-five from White Sand Beach by the northern road; from Lonely Beach or Bang Bao it is the long way round, an hour or more, because the coast road does not join up across the south of the island. Songthaews know it; say “rong phayaban Koh Chang”. For an ambulance call the hospital or 1669. Serious cases are taken on by ambulance to the car ferry and across to Trat Hospital, about an hour and a half door to door in daylight.
