Trat’s only private hospital and the one that runs the island one: about 114 beds on Sukhumvit Road on the north side of Trat town, part of the Bangkok Hospital group, with a 24-hour emergency room, an MRI scanner and the specialists the islands do not have. It is where Koh Chang International Hospital’s ambulance and medical boat deliver their patients, and where insured visitors from all three islands end up for anything that needs more than a night.
What it is known for
Being the mainland’s private hospital, and the hub the islands feed into. Bangkok Hospital Trat is part of the BDMS network, the group behind Bangkok Hospital in the capital and Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, and the province’s only private hospital, in business since the late 1990s. It is a general hospital of around 114 beds with a 24-hour emergency room, an MRI scanner, specialist clinics including heart and orthopaedics, and a patient base that takes in Trat, the neighbouring provinces and Cambodia across the border. It runs the island hospital at White Sand Beach and the medical boat that serves Koh Kood and Koh Mak, so most private-hospital cases from the islands are already in its system by the time they reach the pier.
Who it suits
Insured visitors with anything serious, and anyone from the islands whose problem has outgrown a small hospital: a fracture that needs fixing, a bad infection, chest pain, an admission of more than a night. It is the natural destination when Koh Chang International Hospital transfers you, because the paperwork, the insurer and the medical notes travel with you. Residents of Trat use it for everything from check-ups to surgery. For the most complex cases — major trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac intervention — it in turn transfers to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya or the Bangkok flagships, by road or by air.
Cost and insurance
Private prices, well below Bangkok’s flagships and below the island hospital it runs, but several times the public rate: island guides put a plain consultation at a few hundred baht here against a few thousand on Koh Chang. Cashless treatment is available where your insurer has an agreement with BDMS, usually for admissions; outpatient visits are normally paid on the day and claimed back. Expect a deposit on admission if there is no guarantee of payment. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, keep every receipt and the discharge summary, and ask for an English medical certificate — all three are needed for a claim, and the hospital produces them as a matter of routine.
Getting there
On the Sukhumvit highway on the north side of Trat town, a few minutes from the bus terminal and about half an hour by road from the Koh Chang ferry piers at Ao Thammachat and Centrepoint; Laem Sok pier, for the Koh Kood boats, is forty minutes, and Trat airport about the same. From Koh Chang the hospital or its island branch will arrange the crossing and an ambulance on the far side; call +66 39 612 000, or 1719 from a Thai phone.
