Founded in 1976 as the first teaching hospital of Taipei Medical University, this is the large hospital nearest the Xinyi district, where a great many visitors stay and shop. It runs around 800 beds and a 24-hour emergency service, and its Dream Way International Healthcare Center is the one on this list that publishes Saturday morning hours as well as weekday ones.
What it is known for
Its location and its international desk. TMUH is the first of Taipei Medical University’s affiliated hospitals, founded in 1976, and at around 800 beds it is the smallest hospital on this page — which in Taipei still means a full general hospital with the usual specialties and a 24-hour emergency service. The Dream Way International Healthcare Center, on the fourteenth floor of the third medical building, is built for patients who do not hold Taiwanese health insurance: pre-visit consultation, written cost estimates, visa help, interpreters, transport, and remote consultations for anyone planning treatment from abroad.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Xinyi, around Taipei 101, in the department-store district or along Xinyi Road, who would rather not cross the city while unwell. It suits a planned visit particularly well, because the Dream Way centre opens Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30, and on Saturday mornings from 08:30 to 12:30 — the only international centre on this page that works a weekend at all. For something that plainly needs a national referral centre — major trauma, complex surgery — the bigger hospitals to the north and west have more behind them, and TMUH will refer you on.
Cost and insurance
A visitor pays privately here as everywhere in Taiwan, and the international centre will quote a written estimate before treatment, which is worth requesting. It publishes one price openly: a thirty-minute video consultation at NT$5,000, useful mainly to anyone arranging care before flying. Ordinary walk-in charges are a great deal lower. The centre keeps medical records for two years, which helps a slow insurance claim. Expect to pay at the cashier by card or cash and to claim afterwards, and ask for the itemised receipt and an English-language diagnosis certificate before you go.
Getting there
The hospital is on Wuxing Street in Xinyi, beside the university campus, roughly a ten-minute walk south-east of Taipei 101/World Trade Center station on the red Tamsui–Xinyi line; Xinyi Anhe station on the same line is a similar distance to the west. From the Xinyi malls a taxi takes a few minutes, and drivers know the university. The international centre asks for an appointment, so telephone or email before a non-urgent visit.
