The most conveniently placed large hospital in Taipei for anyone staying around Zhongshan or Shuanglian: 900 beds, about 230 emergency visits a day, and a front door three minutes’ walk from the metro. It is run by a non-profit medical foundation rather than a commercial operator, and its international centre has been handling foreign patients since 2008.
What it is known for
Being a serious hospital in the middle of where visitors actually stay. The Taipei campus holds 900 beds and around 3,400 staff, with 65 intensive-care beds, an eight-bed burn centre, 27 operating theatres and three catheterisation labs. The health ministry grades it a severe-level emergency responsibility hospital, meaning it takes the worst cases in its area; it keeps a trauma consultant on site around the clock and runs cardiac catheterisation at any hour. A children’s hospital sits on the same campus. Its international centre also arranges overseas transfers, including repatriation by air ambulance, which few hospitals here advertise.
Who it suits
Almost any visitor staying in Zhongshan, around Taipei Main Station or along the northern stretch of the red line — for a stomach upset at midnight as readily as for something that needs admitting. It is the shortest journey on this list from a hotel bed to a triage nurse. The international centre opens Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, so use it for a planned appointment, a second opinion or help with paperwork; for anything urgent, go straight to the emergency room, which is open whether or not the centre is.
Cost and insurance
Emergency registration is published at NT$300 in the daytime and NT$200 at night, on weekends and on public holidays — that is the registration fee alone, with treatment, tests and medicines charged on top, and a visitor without Taiwanese cover pays the uninsured rate for all of it. Even so the totals surprise most travellers by being small. Pay at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card. Direct billing to a foreign insurer is unusual and needs arranging in advance through the international centre, so plan on paying and claiming, and ask for an English diagnosis certificate.
Getting there
Shuanglian station, code R12 on the red Tamsui–Xinyi line, Exit 2: turn left, walk along Minsheng W. Road, and the hospital is on your left after what the hospital itself calls about a three-minute walk. Buses stop outside at the stop named after the hospital. Do not aim for Zhongshan station, which is a different stop and further away. The site is right on Zhongshan N. Road, so a taxi or a ride-hailing car can pull up at the door, and 119 will bring an ambulance if you need one.
