The hospital most visitors will find themselves closest to: a very large public teaching hospital spread over several buildings either side of Zhongshan S. Road, fifteen minutes on foot from Taipei Main Station and closer still to Ximending. Its emergency room never closes, and its International Medical Service Center exists precisely because foreign patients turn up.
What it is known for
Depth and reputation. Founded in 1895, NTUH is the teaching hospital of National Taiwan University and the place Taiwanese doctors are trained; it holds around 2,100 beds across an East Campus, a West Campus, a children’s hospital and a newer health building, with 26 clinical departments and every specialty a national referral centre is expected to have. For a traveller the relevant part is smaller: a 24-hour emergency department in the East Campus, entered from Xuzhou Road, and an international centre, open since 2005, that is the designated hospital for foreign missions and international assistance companies in Taipei.
Who it suits
Anyone staying around Taipei Main Station, Ximending or Zhongzheng who needs a hospital rather than a clinic, and anyone who wants a national referral centre. Two doors lead in. The International Medical Service Center — its desk open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00, its clinic 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 16:30 — gives you a dedicated nurse, English-language handling and a booked slot, and suits a planned visit. It asks for at least three days’ notice. The ordinary outpatient clinic is far cheaper but is self-service and runs in Mandarin; the hospital itself suggests bringing a Mandarin-speaking friend if you use it. In an emergency neither applies — you simply walk into the emergency room.
Cost and insurance
A visitor is not covered by Taiwan’s national health insurance and pays the full price, which is still modest by Western standards. The international clinic publishes its rates: NT$500 to register and NT$1,500 for a thirty-minute consultation, with tests and medicines on top, payable in cash or by card. An ordinary emergency-room registration is much less. Direct billing happens only where your insurer already holds a contract with the hospital, so most travellers pay and claim. Ask the desk for an itemised receipt and an English-language diagnosis certificate before you leave; both are issued routinely, but only if you ask.
Getting there
NTU Hospital station sits on the red Tamsui–Xinyi line, and Exit 2 opens onto Changde Street, which is the West Campus’s own address. The hospital puts Taipei Main Station about fifteen minutes away on foot, or roughly NT$100 by taxi. For the emergency room you want the East Campus at No. 7 Zhongshan S. Road, and the entrance visitors are directed to is on Xuzhou Road — worth knowing at night, when access to the rest of the site is controlled between 22:00 and 06:00. In a real emergency call 119 rather than making your own way.
