The Medical City is the hospital for Ortigas, Pasig and Mandaluyong, a few minutes east of the Ortigas Center malls and hotels on Ortigas Avenue. Its own site describes two nursing towers with a capacity of up to 800 beds and accreditation by Joint Commission International since 2006, and a ground-floor Medical Concierge desk that handles enquiries from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
What it is known for
Size, and holding the eastern side of the metro on its own. The Medical City moved to its present site on Ortigas Avenue in Pasig in 2004 and describes two nursing towers with a capacity of up to 800 beds, which makes it the largest private hospital on this page. It has been accredited by Joint Commission International since 2006, runs the full set of tertiary services, and heads a network of clinics and hospitals that extends beyond the Philippines. A Medical Concierge desk on the ground floor is the place to start if you do not know where to go.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Ortigas Center, Pasig, Mandaluyong or the southern edge of Quezon City — which, given the traffic on EDSA, is a genuinely different city from Makati at five in the afternoon. It handles serious illness and major surgery as well as any hospital in the country, and the concierge desk makes it easy to get in front of the right specialist without a referral. If you are staying in Makati or Bonifacio Global City, one of the hospitals on that side will usually be faster to reach.
Cost and insurance
Upper-end Philippine private pricing, and the usual rule: payment secured before admission, the bill settled before discharge, and a deposit asked of a foreign patient who has no guarantee of payment in place. Call your insurer’s 24-hour assistance line before you arrive if there is time, so a guarantee can be sent directly to the hospital; otherwise budget to pay and claim. Ask for a written estimate before a procedure, keep the itemised bill, and ask for an English discharge summary and a medical certificate before you go home.
Getting there
On Ortigas Avenue in Pasig, just east of Ortigas Center: about five minutes by car from the hotels and malls around EDSA, though the last stretch of Ortigas Avenue is slow at rush hour. The MRT-3 Ortigas station is a short ride away and taxis and jeepneys run along the avenue all day. Grab is easiest. The trunkline, which is also the emergency number, is +63 2 8988 1000, with a second line on +63 2 8988 7000.
