The public referral hospital for the whole of Siem Reap province, on 2 Thnou Street in the centre of town and a few hundred metres from the children’s hospital. It is where Cambodians are treated and where the national ambulance service normally takes an emergency, at a small fraction of private prices. It is also thinly resourced by the standards a visitor will be used to, and it publishes almost nothing about itself — no website, no opening hours, no bed count.
What it is known for
Being the public system in this province: the hospital that takes emergencies from across Siem Reap, admits the patients the health centres refer upwards, and does the work no private hospital here does. For a traveller its significance is straightforward — it is the cheapest care in town, it is central, and it is where an ambulance called on 119 will normally take you. It is not comparable to a Thai provincial hospital in staffing or equipment. Cambodia’s public system is thinly funded, and the country’s major trauma, complex surgery and intensive care are realistically in Bangkok.
Who it suits
Anyone without insurance or money, and anyone whose emergency happens near the centre of town. It is also where a road-accident case picked up by an ambulance is likely to arrive. Expect Khmer paperwork, little English, crowded wards, and families doing much of the routine care for their own patients — which is normal in Cambodia rather than a sign of neglect. If you have a choice and any insurance at all, Royal Angkor or Neak Tep will be a smoother experience, and both will send an ambulance for you.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, which for a foreigner paying cash are a small fraction of a private bill — but payment is still expected, in United States dollars or riel, and usually before you leave. Foreign insurers do not hold direct-billing arrangements with Cambodian public hospitals, so this is pay-and-claim: keep every receipt and ask for a written medical report, in English if one can be produced. If you are well enough to be moved and you do have cover, ring the assistance number on your policy before agreeing to a long admission here.

On 2 Thnou Street in Mondul 1, Sangkat Svay Dangkum, right in the centre of Siem Reap and a few hundred metres from Angkor Hospital for Children — the two are easily confused, so be clear with the driver which one you want. Any tuk-tuk driver knows it as the provincial hospital.
