One of the best-regarded children’s hospitals in Cambodia, opened in 1999 and run as an independent non-profit rather than a business. It treats children only: an adult cannot be seen here. The emergency room and intensive care unit are open around the clock, seven days a week, while the outpatient departments run on weekdays. It exists for Cambodian children and is paid for by donations, which is worth remembering if you use it.
What it is known for
Paediatric care of a standard that would not otherwise exist in a provincial town. Angkor Hospital for Children opened in 1999, after the Japanese photographer Kenro Izu came to photograph the temples and set out to build a hospital instead; it is now Cambodian-led, works with international medical volunteers and donors, and trains health workers as well as treating patients. Its services run from general check-ups and outpatient clinics to inpatient care, major and minor surgery, neonatal and premature care, eye and dental care and physiotherapy, with a 24-hour emergency room and an intensive care unit behind them.
Who it suits
Children, and only children. If you are travelling with a child who is seriously ill or hurt in Siem Reap, this is the strongest paediatric care in the province, and its emergency room is open through the night and at weekends when the outpatient departments are closed. For a minor problem in office hours, Royal Angkor and Neak Tep both run children’s clinics and are the more appropriate places for a visiting family who can pay ordinary private prices. An adult is not treated here at all, in any circumstances.
Cost and insurance
This is a charity, and the money works differently. Since 2022 the hospital has asked families who can afford it for a flat contribution of about US$5 for an outpatient visit, a little more for some inpatient services, and treats free of charge the families who cannot pay; the contribution covers only a small share of what the care actually costs. A visiting family with travel insurance should say so, ask what the treatment is really worth, pay that, and consider a donation on top. Asking for the paperwork a claim needs is a reasonable request to make.
Getting there
Centrally placed on Tep Vong Road where it meets Oum Chhay Street in Svay Dangkum, opposite 10 Makara 1979 High School, which is the landmark to give a driver. The provincial referral hospital is a few hundred metres away, so be clear which of the two you mean. It is a five to ten minute tuk-tuk ride from the Old Market or Pub Street and walkable from much of the town centre in cooler weather. The switchboard is +855 63 963 409; in an emergency simply go.
