The Phu Quoc Night Market & Island Seafood

When the sun drops, Phu Quoc's appetite moves to the Duong Dong night market, where seafood tanks and iced displays line the street: mantis shrimp, sea urchins, flower crabs and grouper grilled to order over coals. It is loud, smoky and great fun — the island's single best food crawl — and around the stalls a bazaar of pearls, peppercorns and sim-berry wine covers every souvenir base.
What to Order
Start with grilled scallops showered in scallion oil and roasted peanuts, then sea urchin — grilled or stirred into rice porridge — and the island signature, goi ca trich: herring salad tossed with coconut and herbs, rolled at the table in rice paper. Seafood is sold by weight, so agree the price per kilo and the cooking style before anything hits the grill; a quick photo of the scale avoids surprises.
Beyond the Grills
The market's other aisles sell Phu Quoc in bottled form — fish sauce, black and red peppercorns, honey and rose-myrtle sim wine — plus pearl jewellery at every price and provenance level. Come hungry around 6–7pm when the coals are fresh, expect peak crowds by 8, and finish with rolled ice cream or a whole chilled coconut. Stalls run nightly; rain just shifts the crowd under the awnings rather than stopping it.
