The Mekong Delta grows a huge share of Vietnam's fruit, and its islands feel like one continuous orchard: mango, rambutan, longan, pomelo, durian, mangosteen and jackfruit shading low garden houses in the delta's miệt vườn — "garden country" — tradition. Visiting is simple and delicious: orchards around Cai Be, Vinh Long and Can Tho welcome guests for a walk under the trees and a plate of whatever is ripe.
Tasting the Seasons
Fruit peaks with the early rains, roughly May to August, when rambutan and durian tip the branches — but something is always in season, and orchard owners will talk you through it over honey tea. Entry usually costs little and includes a tasting plate; some gardens let you pick. Chợ Lách in Ben Tre, famous for its fruit-tree nurseries and flower farms, shows the industry behind the delta's green thumb.
Sleeping in the Garden
The classic delta overnight is a garden-house homestay on An Binh island near Vinh Long or along Can Tho's Phong Dien canals: dinner cooked with the hosts, fireflies and frog-song after dark, bicycles and a dawn paddle before breakfast. Rooms run from fan-cooled simple to quietly boutique; book ahead in the December–April dry season, when the delta sees its most visitors.
