Across the river from My Tho, Ben Tre is Vietnam's coconut province — tens of millions of palms crowding every bank, and a local economy that uses every part of the nut. Workshops boil coconut cream into kẹo dừa caramel candy and hand-wrap each piece in edible rice paper; other villages twist husk fibre into coir rope and mats. It is the delta at its most fragrant.
The Coconut Economy, Up Close
Standard Ben Tre boat tours thread the islets of the Ham Luong river: a candy workshop where you taste the caramel still warm, a coir yard where husks become rope and matting, honey tea at a bee farm, then a horse-cart ride down a village lane to lunch under the palms. It is touristy in the gentlest way — the workshops are real businesses, and everything you watch being made is on sale for very little.
Slow Days on the Islets
Beyond the day-trip circuit, Ben Tre rewards a night: cycle levee paths between coconut groves, kayak the smaller creeks, and eat the province's coconut-braised specialties — even the rice may be cooked in coconut water. The town sits roughly two hours from Ho Chi Minh City by expressway bus, which makes it the easiest first taste of the deep delta.
