The Cao Bang Loop in Ban Gioc and Cao Bang

Part of the Ban Gioc and Cao Bang travel guide — see every topic in All Ban Gioc and Cao Bang Guides.

Like the better-known Ha Giang loop, Cao Bang can be explored on a road trip of two or three days. You start and end in Cao Bang city and drive through passes, valleys and villages to Ban Gioc and back. The roads are quieter than Ha Giang, and the scenery is softer and greener. You can ride a motorbike yourself, go with a local rider, or hire a car with a driver.

A typical route

A common east loop leaves Cao Bang city and climbs over Ma Phuc pass toward the waterfall area. You visit Ban Gioc and Nguom Ngao cave, then spend the night in a homestay near the falls or in Phong Nam valley. On the second day you ride back through other valleys, often with a stop at the Thang Hen lakes on the way to the city. Some people add a third day for slower travel or extra side roads. The full loop is roughly 200 to 300 kilometres, depending on the route. Plan each day carefully.

Motorbike, rider or car

Renting a motorbike in Cao Bang city gives you the most freedom. Rental shops and some hotels offer semi-automatic and automatic bikes. Only ride if you are experienced and hold a valid licence for Vietnam. If you are not confident, hire an easy rider, a local driver who rides the bike while you sit behind. Many visitors choose a car with a driver instead. It is safer, more comfortable in rain and cold, and good for families. Hotels and homestays in Cao Bang city can arrange all three options.

Road safety

The mountain roads have many sharp bends, steep climbs and some loose gravel. Trucks and buses take the corners wide, so keep to your side and sound your horn on blind bends. Rain and fog can arrive quickly and make the road slippery and hard to see. Always wear a good helmet and closed shoes, and avoid riding after dark. Check the brakes and tyres before you leave. Landslides can close roads in the wet season, so ask locally about the route each morning. Do not drink and ride.

How much time to allow

Distances look short on a map, but average speeds are slow, often 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The drive from Cao Bang city to Ban Gioc alone takes about two to two and a half hours without stops. With photo stops, the cave and the waterfall, that first day is full. Two days is the minimum for the main loop, and three days is more relaxed. Add a day at each end for the trip from Hanoi, which takes about six hours each way. Fuel stations are found in towns, but fill up when you can.

What to pack

The weather in the mountains changes quickly. Bring a rain jacket or poncho in every season, and warm layers from about November to March, when nights can be cold. Sunscreen and sunglasses help on clear days. Carry some cash, because small villages may not accept cards and ATMs are mostly in towns. A phone with mobile data and an offline map is useful, but signal can drop in deep valleys. Pack light in a waterproof bag that is easy to tie onto a bike. A small first aid kit is a good idea.
