Ban Gioc and Cao Bang

Cao Bang is a quiet mountain province in the far north of Vietnam, about 270 kilometres from Hanoi. It has fewer visitors than Sa Pa or Ha Giang, but the scenery is just as strong. Steep limestone peaks rise from flat green valleys, clear rivers wind between rice fields, and small villages of wooden stilt houses sit at the foot of the hills. The star sight is Ban Gioc, a wide waterfall that drops in white curtains over mossy rock on Vietnam's northern edge. Bamboo rafts take you close to the spray. A few kilometres away, Nguom Ngao cave has about two kilometres of lit paths past huge rock shapes. Much of the area is part of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark. Most people base themselves in Cao Bang city and drive a loop of two or three days, with nights in village homestays. The roads are slow and winding, so give yourself time.
