Loy Krathong Festival in Sukhothai

Part of the Sukhothai travel guide — see every topic in All Sukhothai Guides.

Loy Krathong is a Thai festival of lights held on the full moon night of the 12th month of the Thai calendar, which falls in November. Sukhothai Historical Park hosts one of the biggest and most famous events in the country. For several nights the old city glows with candles, lanterns and fireworks. This guide covers what you will see and how to plan your trip.

When it happens

The main night of Loy Krathong is the full moon of the 12th Thai lunar month. The date moves each year, but it is always in November. In 2026 the full moon night falls in late November. In Sukhothai the events at the historical park usually run for several days, often up to ten days, before and on the main night. Check the official dates with the Tourism Authority of Thailand before you book, because the program can change. The weather in November is usually dry and pleasant in the evening.

Candles on the water

A krathong is a small round float, often made from a slice of banana trunk and decorated with banana leaves and flowers. People put a candle on top and set it on the water. On the main night thousands of small floats drift across the ponds of the old city. The candlelight on the dark water, with the towers behind, makes a beautiful scene. You can buy a float from stalls at the park. Many are now made from bread or other materials that break down in water. Thousands of small candles and oil lamps are also set out along paths and walls.

Lights, fireworks and the show

Each evening of the festival, the central zone is lit with coloured lights and lanterns. Fireworks light up the sky over the ponds. There are often parades with music and dancers in traditional costume. A large evening light and sound show tells the story of old Sukhothai with actors, music, lights and fireworks around the ruins. The show needs a ticket, with different seat prices, and tickets often sell out, so buy early through the official sellers. Food and craft stalls fill the area near the park, so you can eat and walk around between events.

Planning around the crowds

Loy Krathong is the busiest time of year in Sukhothai. Hotels and guesthouses near the park fill up months ahead, and prices rise. Book your room as early as you can, or stay in New Sukhothai and travel to the park each evening. Songthaews and taxis are busy at night, so agree on a return ride before the show ends. Arrive at the park early to find a good spot by the ponds. Keep your phone and money in a safe pocket in the crowds. Bring insect spray, because mosquitoes come out near the water after dark.
