Golden Triangle Viewpoint in Chiang Rai

Part of the Chiang Rai travel guide — see every topic in All Chiang Rai Guides.

The Golden Triangle is the place where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. It sits at Sop Ruak, where the small Ruak River flows into the wide Mekong. From the Thai bank you can see all three countries at once. It is about 70 km north of Chiang Rai and about 9 km from the river town of Chiang Saen. This guide covers the viewpoint, the river and how to plan a visit.

The meeting of three countries

At Sop Ruak, the Ruak River joins the Mekong. Thailand is on the south bank of the Ruak and the west bank of the Mekong. Myanmar is across the Ruak, to the north. Laos is across the Mekong, to the east. A large sign marks the spot and is a popular place for photos. A big golden Buddha statue sits in a boat-shaped base on the riverbank. Small viewpoints with steps give the best views over the water. The view is wide and open, and best in clear morning light or at sunset.

Boat rides on the Mekong

Long-tail boats wait at small piers along the bank. A short trip takes you onto the Mekong to see the meeting point and the three shores up close. You stay on the water and do not land in another country, unless you choose a trip that includes a border crossing with proper papers. Ask exactly what the trip includes before you pay. Boats can also take you along the river to Chiang Saen. Life jackets should be on board, so ask for one if you do not see it. The river is calm in the dry season and fast and brown after heavy rain.

A museum on the riverbank

Near Sop Ruak there are museums about the history of the area. The region was once known for opium growing. Today many hill farms grow tea, coffee and fruit instead. The Hall of Opium is a large modern museum with clear displays in English. It explains how the plant was grown and traded, and how farmers moved to other crops. A smaller museum, the House of Opium, is in the village. A visit takes one to two hours and is a good choice on a very hot or rainy afternoon.

Chiang Saen and the river road

Chiang Saen is a quiet town on the Mekong, about 9 km south of Sop Ruak. It has a riverside road with simple restaurants that serve fish and northern food. The town is a pleasant stop for lunch before you return to Chiang Rai. West of Sop Ruak, a road runs to the border town of Mae Sai. Many day tours combine the Golden Triangle with Mae Sai, Doi Tung or Doi Mae Salong. If you drive yourself, start early. It is a long day with many stops.

Getting there and when to go

The drive from Chiang Rai takes about 1.5 hours. Most visitors come with a day tour or a hired car and driver. Local buses go from Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen, and you can take a songthaew or taxi from there to Sop Ruak. The cool, dry season from about November to February has the clearest views and the most comfortable air. From about February to April, smoke from fires across the region often makes the view hazy. The rainy season, from about May to October, brings green banks and a full, fast river.
