Qixingtan and the Hualien Coast in Taroko Gorge
Part of the Taroko Gorge travel guide — see every topic in All Taroko Gorge Guides.
Qixingtan is a long, curved bay just north of Hualien city, near the airport. It has a grey pebble beach, clear blue water and the Central Mountain Range rising behind it. It is one of the easiest places near Hualien to enjoy the Pacific coast, and it stays a good choice when parts of Taroko are closed. A cycle path runs along the shore, and the bay is a popular spot for sunrise.
The bay
The beach at Qixingtan is made of smooth, round pebbles in shades of grey, white and green. The bay curves for a few kilometres, with a walking path along the top of the beach. On clear days you can see the mountains of Taroko to the north. The water drops off quickly near the shore, and waves can be strong. Swimming is not recommended here, even on calm days. Instead, people walk on the beach, sit on the pebbles, and watch the waves. There are cafes, small shops and places to rent bikes in the village behind the beach.
Sunrise
Qixingtan faces east over the Pacific, so the sun rises straight out of the sea. On clear mornings, many people come before dawn to watch it. Sunrise times change through the year, from very early in summer to later in winter. Check the time the night before. The best spots are along the beach path or on the pebbles near the north end of the bay. Bring a light jacket, as mornings by the sea can be cool and windy outside summer. After sunrise, the village cafes start to open for breakfast.
The coastal cycle path
A cycle path runs from Qixingtan south along the coast toward Hualien city. It passes the shore, parks and the harbour area, with sea views for much of the way. The path is mostly flat and suits casual riders. Bike rental shops in Qixingtan and Hualien city rent simple bikes and e-bikes by the hour or day. Ride in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. Some sections share space with walkers, so ride slowly. The full ride to the city and back is a pleasant half day.
More coast near Hualien
South of Hualien city, Provincial Highway 11 follows the coast for a long way toward Taitung. It passes rocky headlands, small beaches, rice terraces and Indigenous Amis villages. Popular stops include viewpoints over the sea and short walks along the shore. A day trip by car or tour can cover part of it. In the city, the waterfront parks are good for an evening walk. When planning, remember that the whole east coast can be hit by typhoons from summer to autumn, and strong waves can make the shore dangerous.
