Cycling Around Hualien in Taroko Gorge
Part of the Taroko Gorge travel guide — see every topic in All Taroko Gorge Guides.
Hualien is one of the best areas in Taiwan for cycling. Flat paths follow the coast and circle a lake. Quiet roads cross rice fields in the East Rift Valley. And for strong riders, one of the hardest road climbs in Asia starts at the sea near Qixingtan and climbs through Taroko into the high mountains. Bike rental is easy in Hualien city, and many routes start near the train station.
Easy rides
For a relaxed ride, start with the coastal path between Qixingtan and Hualien city. It is mostly flat and has sea views. Another good choice is Liyu Lake, a quiet lake in the hills south-west of the city. A path loops around the lake, with forest on one side and water on the other. The loop is short and suits families. Both rides work well on a simple rental bike or an e-bike. Ride in the morning, before the heat and wind of the afternoon. Carry water, as shops are few on parts of these routes.
The East Rift Valley
South of Hualien, the East Rift Valley lies between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range. Its flat floor is covered with rice fields, small towns and quiet farm roads. Many cyclists take a train south, rent a bike in a town such as Ruisui or Chishang, and ride on local bike paths through the fields. Chishang, in Taitung County, is well known for its open rice-field road with mountain views. Distances are long, so plan short loops from one town rather than riding the whole valley in one day.
The long climb
The Taiwan KOM Challenge, a well-known road cycling race, starts at Qixingtan and climbs through Taroko Gorge to Wuling, a pass on Highway 14A at over 3,000 metres. The route is about 100 kilometres with very little flat ground. It is a serious ride for experienced cyclists only. Since the 2024 earthquake, the road through the gorge has had closures and traffic controls, so this route may not be possible. Check Taroko National Park notices and Highway Bureau road conditions before planning any ride on Highway 8. Never ride past a closure.
Renting and riding safely
Bike shops in Hualien city, near the train station and in Qixingtan rent city bikes, e-bikes and some road bikes. Bring your passport, as shops may ask for ID. Taiwan drives on the right. Watch for scooters, which are everywhere and often pass close. Use lights in tunnels and at dusk, and wear a helmet. Summer is very hot, and sun and wind on the coast can be strong, so start early and drink often. Typhoons can close roads from summer to autumn. After heavy rain, avoid mountain roads, where falling rock is a real risk.
