Shennong Street and Cafés in Tainan
Part of the Tainan travel guide — see every topic in All Tainan Guides.
Shennong Street is a short, narrow lane of restored two-storey wooden shophouses near the old canal port of central Tainan. Many of the houses now hold small cafés, bars, design shops and galleries. Red lanterns hang over the street at night. Around it are other creative spots: Haian Road with its street art, small cafés on Zhengxing Street, and Tainan Spring, a new park with a lagoon. Together they show the young, creative side of the city.
Shennong Street
Shennong Street is only a few hundred metres long, and you can walk it in ten minutes. The old houses have narrow fronts, wooden doors and small upper balconies. Many have been restored by young owners who live upstairs and run a shop below. You will find coffee shops, cocktail bars, tea rooms, craft stores and tiny galleries. The street is quiet during the day and best in the evening, when lanterns and shop lights are on. Remember that people live here, so keep your voice down at night.
Cafés and bars
Tainan has a strong café culture, and the area around Shennong Street is one of the best places to try it. Many cafés are in old houses with wooden beams, tiled floors and small courtyards. They serve pour-over coffee, local teas, cakes and light meals. In the evening, small bars open in the same houses and serve cocktails, craft beer and local spirits. Most places are small, with only a few seats, so you may need to wait at busy times. Some close one day a week.
Haian Road art street
Haian Road crosses the end of Shennong Street. Its section near Shennong Street is known for public art, with murals, wall paintings and installations on the buildings and in the street. The area has many bars and late-night food stalls, and it is busy on weekend evenings. Pieces change over time, so each visit can be a little different. A short walk away, Blueprint Culture and Creative Park fills a group of old dormitory houses with design shops and a large mural made to look like an architect's blueprint.
Zhengxing Street
Zhengxing Street, a few blocks east, is another small lane known for cafés, dessert shops and ice cream. The street is lined with low old houses painted in soft colours. Local shop owners have worked together to keep the street small and independent, and it has a relaxed, friendly feel. It gets busy on weekend afternoons, especially for its popular ice cream shops. On weekdays it is calm and good for a slow coffee. It is easy to walk between Zhengxing Street, Haian Road and Shennong Street.
Tainan Spring
Tainan Spring is a new public park in the city centre, designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV. It replaced an old shopping mall that had stood empty for many years. The mall was taken down, and in its place the designers created a sunken plaza with a shallow lagoon, trees and open steps. In summer, children play in the water. It is a fine example of how Tainan is reusing old spaces in a modern way. Entry is free, and the park is open all day.
