Coast and Sunsets in Tainan
Part of the Tainan travel guide — see every topic in All Tainan Guides.
Tainan faces west across the Taiwan Strait, so its coast is made for sunsets. The shore is low and sandy, with long beaches, sandbars, a large lagoon and fish farms. It is not a place for big surf or coral, but it is calm, open and easy to reach. This guide covers the best coastal spots near the city and what to expect.
Golden Coast
Golden Coast is a long beach south of Anping, along the edge of the city. A wide promenade with lights, seating and sculptures runs beside the sand. In the evening many locals come here to walk, jog and watch the sunset over the sea. The sky often turns gold and orange, which gives the beach its name. Swimming is usually not allowed because of strong currents, so enjoy it from the sand. Small cafés and food stalls nearby sell drinks and snacks.
Yuguang Island
Yuguang Island is a long, thin sandbar just south of Anping harbour, joined to the mainland by a bridge. It has a quiet beach, a strip of pine trees and a few small cafés. Because it faces west, it is another favourite sunset spot. It is less crowded than Golden Coast and feels more natural. People come here to fly kites, walk on the sand and take photos at the water's edge. It is easy to reach by bike or scooter from Anping.
The Qigu lagoon
The Qigu lagoon, north of the city, is one of the largest lagoons in Taiwan. It is sheltered from the open sea by long sandbars. Oyster farms on bamboo frames cover much of the water. Boat trips cross the lagoon to the outer sandbar, where you can walk on the beach and watch the waves. On some trips the crew grill fresh oysters for passengers. The boats are simple and the trip is relaxed. Trips depend on tides and weather, so ask locally.
Mashagou beach
Further north, in Jiangjun District, Mashagou has a long beach with fine sand and a recreation area. It is one of the few places on the Tainan coast set up for beach days, with facilities and seasonal water activities. On clear days it is a good spot for sunsets and walks along the shore. It is far from the city centre, so it combines best with a day trip to the salt fields and wetlands nearby. A car or scooter is the easiest way to get there.
Coastal cycling
The flat coast is good for cycling. Bike paths link central Tainan with Anping, the harbour waterfront, Yuguang Island and Golden Coast. Public bikes can be rented in the city with a transport card or app. Further north, quiet roads run between fish ponds and salt fields, but distances are long and there is little shade. Ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In summer, check the weather for typhoons and heavy rain, which can bring strong winds to the coast.
