Surfing and Water Sports in Kenting
Part of the Kenting travel guide — see every topic in All Kenting Guides.
Kenting is one of the most popular surf areas in Taiwan. The peninsula has coast facing in many directions, so there is often a place with waves. The east coast gets bigger surf in the windy months, while the south and west coasts are calmer in summer. Snorkelling and diving are also good here because the reefs are close to shore. Surf shops and schools offer board rental and lessons for all levels.
Jialeshui on the east coast
Jialeshui is a small coastal area on the east side of the peninsula, north of the main beaches. It faces the open Pacific Ocean, so it gets steady waves for much of the year, especially from autumn to spring. The beach near the village is popular with surfers of many levels, and several surf shops and guesthouses are nearby. Further along the coast is a scenic area of wave-carved rocks with strange shapes. Access to that rock coast may need a ticket and a short shuttle ride, so check locally. The east coast is wilder than the south, with fewer services.
The surf seasons
Waves in Kenting change with the season. From about October to March, the northeast monsoon brings stronger wind and bigger swell, mostly to the east coast near Jialeshui. This is the main season for experienced surfers. In summer, from about May to September, southwest wind and passing storms can bring waves to the south side, around Nanwan. Summer waves are often smaller and softer, which suits beginners. Typhoons in summer and autumn can create huge, dangerous surf. Only experts should go out when a storm is near, and beaches may close. Local surf shops can tell you which beach is working on the day.
Lessons for beginners
If you have never surfed, a lesson is the best way to start. Surf schools in Jialeshui and around Nanwan offer group and private lessons. A first class often lasts about two hours and includes a soft board, a rash guard and some time on the sand before you go into the water. Many teachers speak some English, but ask when you book. Choose a school that checks the conditions and keeps beginners in small, safe waves. The sun is strong, so wear a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen, and drink water between sessions.
Snorkelling and diving
The coral reefs of Kenting are close to shore, so you can see fish and coral with just a mask and snorkel. Popular spots include rocky bays on the south coast and areas near Houbihu, a small harbour on the west side. Dive shops run guided snorkel trips and scuba dives for beginners and certified divers. Visibility is often best in calm summer weather. Wear a life vest if you are not a strong swimmer, and never stand on coral. Water conditions change fast, so go with a local guide if you do not know the area.
Other water fun
Nanwan is the main place for jet skis, banana boats and other fast rides in summer. Some operators also offer glass-bottom boat trips from Houbihu, which let you see the reef without getting wet. Stand-up paddle boards and kayaks are available at some beaches when the sea is calm. Before you book, look at the equipment and the life vests, and make sure the operator has a clear safety briefing. Prices and services change often, so compare a few shops. Avoid fast rides close to swimmers, and keep away from the water when the wind is strong.
