Day Trips in Vigan

Part of the Vigan travel guide — see every topic in All Vigan Guides.

Vigan is a good base for exploring the Ilocos Sur countryside. Within a short drive, you can find waterfalls, green gardens, quiet beaches and small craft towns. Further north, Ilocos Norte has windmills, sand dunes and beaches. This guide covers simple day trips and longer options, with a focus on nature and modern sights.

Hidden Garden

Hidden Garden is a large plant nursery and garden in Bulala, on the edge of Vigan. It has shady paths, many kinds of plants and a restaurant serving local food. It is a pleasant place to escape the heat and have a meal. Many kalesa and tricycle tours include it. It is a short ride from the centre. Check opening hours before you go, especially if you plan to eat there. The garden is good for families and for anyone who likes plants. You can buy small plants and local snacks. It can be busy at lunchtime, so go early or late. Wear light clothes and bring insect spray.

Pinsal Falls

Pinsal Falls is a waterfall in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, south of Vigan. It is one of the larger waterfalls in the province. The water flows over rocks into a wide pool, and some visitors swim when conditions are safe. The trip takes about one hour or more by car, depending on the route. Hire a van or car with a driver for the day. The falls are strongest in and after the rainy season, but paths can be muddy.

Beaches

The coast of Ilocos Sur has long, quiet beaches with grey or light sand. They are good for a walk and a sunset, but they are less developed than famous Philippine beach towns. Some beaches have small resorts and cafés. Swimming can be unsafe when the waves are strong, especially in the rainy season. Ask locally about safe places to swim, and avoid the water in rough weather. Bring water and food, as there are few shops on quiet beaches. Wear sun cream, as the sun is strong.

North to Ilocos Norte

With an early start, you can reach the Paoay area of Ilocos Norte in about one and a half to two hours by car. The Paoay sand dunes offer 4x4 rides and sandboarding. Laoag, the main city of Ilocos Norte, is nearby. The Bangui windmills, Kapurpurawan rock formation and Pagudpud beaches are further north and are better seen with an overnight stay. Many travellers fly into Laoag and then travel south to Vigan, or the other way round. Roads are good, and the drive is easy, but allow time for stops.
