Calle Crisologo in Vigan

Part of the Vigan travel guide — see every topic in All Vigan Guides.

Calle Crisologo is the best-known street in Vigan. It is lined with old two-storey houses with stone walls below and wooden upper floors. The historic town of Vigan is a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed in 1999. The street is closed to cars, so it is a pleasant place to walk. This guide explains what to see, when to go and how to enjoy it.

The old houses

The houses on Calle Crisologo were built long ago by wealthy merchant families. They mix building ideas from Asia and Europe. The lower floor is made of thick stone or brick, and the upper floor is wood, with wide windows and sliding panels. Many lower floors are now shops, cafés and small hotels. Some houses are open as museums. The street is paved with stone, so wear comfortable shoes. Look up at the upper floors to see the wooden windows and details. Some house museums show old furniture and daily life in past times. Please do not touch or lean on old walls and windows.

Day and night

In the daytime, the street is bright and busy with visitors and kalesa horse carts. Early morning is the quietest time and the best time for photos. In the evening, warm lamps light up the houses, and the street feels calm and beautiful. Many shops stay open into the evening. Weekends and holidays are the busiest. If you stay overnight in Vigan, you can enjoy the street both early and late, when day trippers have gone. Bring water during the day, as it can be very hot. Evening is also cooler and more comfortable for walking.

Shops and souvenirs

The shops along the street sell local crafts, woven fabrics, pottery, snacks and souvenirs. You will find local sweets, bagnet (crispy fried pork) and longganisa sausage packed to take home. Some shops sell antiques or furniture. Prices are usually fixed in larger shops, but you can ask politely in small stalls. Compare a few shops before you buy. Many shops close in the late evening. Packaged food makes a good gift. Ask how long it keeps before you buy. Some shops can wrap fragile items for travel.

Nearby squares

Calle Crisologo is near two large plazas, Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos. Plaza Salcedo has a fountain show with lights and music in the evening; check the time locally. Plaza Burgos is known for its food stalls, where people eat Vigan empanada. The area around the plazas is good for an evening walk. Most of the historic centre is small enough to explore on foot in a few hours. There are benches and shady trees for a rest. The plazas are popular with families in the evening, and the mood is relaxed and friendly.
