Surfing Guide in Siargao

Part of the Siargao travel guide — see every topic in All Siargao Guides.

Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines. The island faces the open Pacific Ocean, and its reefs create strong, clean waves. The most famous wave is Cloud 9, near General Luna. But Siargao is not only for experts. There are gentle waves for beginners and many surf schools. This guide covers the main breaks, the seasons and how to learn.

Cloud 9

Cloud 9 is a powerful reef wave just north of General Luna. On good days it forms a fast, hollow tube that breaks over a shallow reef. It is for experienced surfers only. A long wooden boardwalk leads out over the reef to a viewing tower. Anyone can walk out to watch the surfers, and it is a popular spot for photos at sunrise and sunset. The boardwalk area also has small shops and cafes. Even if you do not surf, a visit to Cloud 9 is part of any trip to Siargao.

Waves for beginners

Beginners usually start at gentler breaks near General Luna. Jacking Horse, close to Cloud 9, has smaller waves and is a common place for first lessons. Other beginner spots are reached by short boat rides from General Luna. Waves at all these places break over reef, so it is important to learn with an instructor who knows the tides. Many lessons are held at mid to high tide, when there is more water over the reef. Wear reef shoes or booties if your instructor suggests them.

Surf lessons and board rental

General Luna has many surf schools and local instructors. A lesson usually lasts one to two hours and includes the board, an instructor and sometimes a boat ride to the break. Instructors often push you onto the waves and help you stand up, so many beginners ride a wave on their first day. Board rental is easy to find for more experienced surfers. Ask about rash guards and sun protection. Prices vary by school and by whether a boat is needed, so compare a few options.

Surf seasons

Siargao has surf all year, but the waves change with the seasons. The biggest and best waves for experts usually come from about August to November. The Siargao International Surfing Cup is held at Cloud 9 in this season, and in 2026 a World Surf League top-tour event runs there from late October. From about December to March, the wind can be stronger and the waves less clean on some breaks, but there are still good days. From about April to July, the sea is often calmer and the waves are smaller, which is better for beginners. Check a surf forecast before you go.

Surf safety and respect

Most Siargao waves break over shallow reef, which can cause cuts. Learn to fall flat and never dive head first. Know your level, and do not paddle out at Cloud 9 unless you are an experienced surfer. Respect the local surfers and the order of who catches each wave. Wait your turn and do not drop in on someone already riding. Use reef-safe sun protection or wear a rash guard. Clean any reef cuts well, as they can become infected in the tropical heat.
