Getting There and Around in Siargao
Part of the Siargao travel guide — see every topic in All Siargao Guides.
Siargao is an island off the northeast coast of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. It is farther from Manila than many other islands, but flights have made it much easier to reach. Once on the island, most people get around by scooter. This guide explains how to arrive and how to travel around the island.
Flying to Siargao
Sayak Airport is in the town of Del Carmen, on the west side of the island. Flights come mainly from Manila and Cebu, and sometimes from other cities. The airport is small, and flights can fill up quickly in the busy months. From the airport, it takes about 45 minutes to one hour by van to General Luna, where most visitors stay. Many hotels offer airport transfers. You can also take a shared van, which waits outside the arrivals area. Book flights early for holidays.
By ferry from Surigao
Another way to reach Siargao is by flying to Surigao City on Mindanao, or to Butuan and going on by road, and then taking a ferry. Boats from Surigao City arrive at Dapa port, in the south of Siargao. Fast boats take about one and a half to two hours, and slower boats are cheaper. From Dapa, General Luna is a short ride by van or tricycle. This route can be cheaper but takes longer. Ferries can be cancelled when the sea is rough, so check the schedule and weather the day before.
Scooters and habal-habal
The easiest way to get around Siargao is by scooter. Many shops in General Luna rent scooters by the day or week. Only rent one if you have experience, and always wear a helmet. Roads are mostly paved but can have holes, dogs and loose sand. If you do not ride, you can take a habal-habal, a motorbike taxi, or a tricycle. Agree on the price first. Vans can be hired for day trips to the north or for airport transfers. At night, roads are dark, so ride slowly.
Money and connection
Bring enough cash to Siargao. General Luna has a few ATMs, but they can run out of money or have long queues, especially at weekends and holidays. Many cafes and hotels now accept cards, but smaller places and island fees are cash only. Mobile data works in General Luna and along the main roads but can be weak in the north and on the islands. Many hotels and cafes have wifi. Power cuts can happen, so keep your phone charged and carry a small light.
Weather and typhoons
Siargao faces the Pacific, so it can be affected by storms. The wetter months are usually from about November to January, with more rain and wind. About March to October is often drier and calmer, though the weather can change quickly. In December 2021, a strong typhoon caused heavy damage on the island. Siargao has since rebuilt, and tourism has returned. Before your trip, check the weather forecast, and follow local advice if a storm warning is announced. Keep a spare day at the end of your trip.
