The River and Rapids in Taman Negara

The Tembeling and Tahan rivers are Taman Negara's arteries. The classic approach to the park is a three-hour longboat journey up the Tembeling from Kuala Tembeling jetty near Jerantut — a slow, low, narrow boat threading between forested banks, which is a genuinely good introduction and much better than the road. Once at Kuala Tahan, boats do everything: they cross to the village, run upstream to the hides and lodges, take you to the Orang Asli settlements, and shoot the rapids on the Tahan.
The boat in
From Kuala Tembeling jetty, around thirty minutes from Jerantut, longboats run upstream to Kuala Tahan in about two and a half to three hours, depending on water levels. It is slow, low to the water and shaded, with forest on both banks and occasional monitor lizards, kingfishers and villages. Departures are typically once or twice a day and depend on having enough passengers and enough water. In low water the boats cannot run at all, and the road route via Jerantut is used instead.
Shooting the rapids
The standard afternoon activity: a longboat upstream on the Sungai Tembeling or the Tahan through a series of rapids, with the boatman running each one and everybody getting comprehensively soaked. It is not whitewater rafting — it is a powered longboat driven through standing waves — and it is a great deal of fun. Trips run one to three hours and cost modestly, often combined with a stop at an Orang Asli settlement or at Lata Berkoh.
Lata Berkoh
A series of rapids and pools on the Tahan river about an hour upstream by boat from headquarters, with clear water, granite boulders and a good swimming spot below the cascade. It is the standard half-day trip and can also be reached on foot along a trail from headquarters in about two to three hours each way. The water is cold, clean and fast, and it is the best swim in the park. Boats cannot always reach it in low water.
The floating restaurants
At Kuala Tahan the village sits across the river from park headquarters, and a line of floating restaurants is moored along the bank between them — wooden platforms on pontoons with plastic tables, serving Malay food cheaply. You cross between the two banks on small boats that run constantly for a ringgit or two. Eating on the water watching the boats go past is the standard Taman Negara evening, and the restaurants are considerably cheaper than the resort on the park side.
